Fast conditions on day after dry period. 5f handicap won in 56.55 by OR74 carrying 3lbs more than this winner. Odd race shape. Marlinka & JFL hook up early on rail and race too freely together and stretch field. UD at 4-5L off lead at halfway, Pabusar at 8-9L and ILouise close to 20L. The last pair both green early and hanging left. JFL flagging by halfway and drop back from Marlinka before 2F out. This seemed to allow Marlinka to settle and then delay her late race effort until towards the last 1F. Good response and pulled clear from others as they stalled & faded. But ILouise at 20L off lead after 1.5F and probably got that back to 10L or under towards the last 1F and beaten just under 8L at the finish despite never looking on top of matters and stalling late on. Marlinka seemed to show something different in surviving an early pace duel and then still being able to produce a strong finish. Presume OR85+. But, the fact that IL & Pabusar (before eased) made so much relative ground a niggle. JFL in first time cheekpieces and you wonder what they were for. He has led through halfway in his previous four races, then been headed between 1-2F out and faded around 1F out. As here he does seem to be able to find a bit of a response late on rather than expiring completely. Another Evans runners that might be ok at OR64-70 up to mid-season but never gives himself a chance to finish a race off. Pabusar always offering to hang left and apart from a brief period inside 2F out the jockey never able to ride his forward. |
