SR set just an averagely stiff pace and presume she ran to her typical form level. FL able to track that pace ok and challenge SR inside 2F out but that filly again showed her ability to plug on late in races to see him off (she had rallied to regain the lead for a win 3 days before this). Which sets a standard to compare what the others achieved. Using the halfway positions versus final placings you could split race into two. SL & FL effectively lead a good piece of work to set up the finishing efforts of the three better ones in the field. Nasharra held up more than 6L off the pace (Spencer) and look green and unbalanced when asked to make his effort 1.5F out and could not even get back to FL. DD just over a length off lead at halfway out wide and going freely at times (not get out of hand) as the pace not strong. CTR another 1.5L+ back and CLad 3L behind DD after a slow start (recovered comfortably to average early pace). DD not immediately sweep past SR after he made his effort 1.5F out and took a bit of time to hit full speed. Progressed past her inside the last 1F and keeping on to the line and not all out. CTR had to switch wider to get clear run around SR/FL and made a similar move to DD starting from 1.5L back. Stalled late and not seeing the race out as well. CLad stoked up by 2F out and able to recover most of the 2L he was behind CTR by 1.5F and before the late race efforts went. Alongside CTR from 1.5F out and also made a similar forward move to the other pair. Able to pip CTR for 2nd by seeing race out fully to line. Winner can rate higher with faster pace. CTR effectively put the distance on SR his jockey said he should have done at Windsor but that proved not to be good enough. Has not looked as 'impressive' in 2 races since debut & suspect quality on that day moderatet to poor and surprised the trainer. Stable often runs it's best 5f type in race but seems to have better types in Retainer & Zebedee for 5f. Dinkum Diamond an early runner for trainer who usually starts in June recently. Also a very rare runner in Listed+ race. Since 2005 has only run one 2yo in Group race (Amour Propre's Cornwallis win) and three in Listed races (all in October after horses had tried Novice/Conditions level). A Listed race runner this early therefore very unusual and instructive given a reliable trainer who knows how good the 2yos he has are. In interview after race Mr Candy said DD had been too lively at home so had thought he should put him into full training and work. He had no other 2yos to work with so DD had to work with older sprint handicappers. Trainer knew he had something when DD was working much better than the older handicappers. Candy said he had worked DD with older horses and DD had thought they were rubbish then he (the horse) ahd thought the opposition at Salisbury was rubbish. Trainer said he had run freely here because Scarlet Rocks was not going fast enough for him. Still finished the race off strongly to hold off the closing CTR & DLad with comfort. Said DD would run in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot next and was a speed 5F horse. |
