High ratings partly depend on relative time to OR112 High Standing who ran 61.35s earlier in the afternoon carrying the same weight. At WFA High Standing should be giving Ballista 23lbs so a 1.43s differential not a great deal more than 23lbs. Which means you could make the ratings even higher. High Standing winning his first 5f race and seemed to do it by trundling past dead horses who had gone too fast. Probably not achieve much and certainly not OR112 despite giving Rose Blossom the right sort of relative beating. Pace not strong and whole field within 2L at halfway on stands rail having started with stalls in centre. Jockeys had clearly decided the rail was the place to be and Hughes nudged the field over to it. Times slow previous evening at course and persistent rain for hours before meeting and going changed to GS. But times on straight course not much different. Difficult course to get a read on at Haydock and the relaid drainage probably very (too?) effective like York. Estimates given not a problem for first two and Ballista & RE are OR84+ horses and winner probably a lot better. RE a typical Hannon STO for a Royal runner that does not improve as much as you would expect. Ratings for 3rd & 4th look too high and BA an abnormally high level for an Alston debut. Either High Standing achieved nowt much or the drainage is turbo charged, or perhaps Barkston Ash is pretty good? One to check how form develops next time and to be careful with the 3rd+ ratings levels. If the first 5 have all won maidens in 2 month's time the ratings were fine, or too low. |
