Field race Far Rail throughout. Slow time. OR53 older handicapper ran 61.78s late on Card carrying 9lbs more than this winner. Early pace look Moderate with newcomer Shy Bird able to head DC before halfway and Mr Khan (outpaced early on previous runs) pulling & fighting for his head. First two home ok for OR70s and pull clear from others ok given shape of race. Most interest in race in Ad Value was the first runner of the year for Alan Swinbank. Trainer has good record with 2yos despite not appearing to really target the area and being more interested in 3yo handicap developers. But, has a good record of buying solid types for lesser money and the earliest debuts in recent years have been interesting to follow. First 4 individuals to make their debuts in 2009 included three of hs five winners during the season. Each of those 3 won STO (SPs 10/1, 6/1, & 5/2). His first three runners in 2008 included one STO winner plus one that won it's 4-5th runs after placing 2nd & 3rd runs. The odd one out placed 4th on all three juvenile runs. But that turned out to be Honimiere who is currently rated in the OR90s for 10f+ wins having started at 5f at 2yo. He had a mixed speed & stamina pedigree but has shown that whatever he was showing Swinbank at 2yo before he ran over 5f was real ability. 2006-7 were even better in overall terms but subtlely different in how they started. 2007 saw him start with four duff ones who were not up to winning anything. He then introduced a batch of 5 season winners in order from June 13th to 30th. Two of those managed to win FTO in weaker races at longer odds. An indication that he does not target strong debuts but they are normally competent FTO so will win accidentally at times. Profits in backing all his debuts in 2 of the last three years because of long SP accidents. 2006 saw 8 of 12 juveniles able to win but three of the first 5 to race were non-winners. 4 of the eight winners won STO and he has shown a profit with STO runners in 4 of the last 6 years. Ad Value supported here to a minor extent but run poorly. But, a horse to check STO and a Stable to follow whatever seeing as he has started running his 2yos at a typical time suggesting the stable is one track. |
