SUMMARY
1st Race of meeting. Ground officially GFG at start of meeting but persistent rain from late morning and heavy rain for 30 minutes before race. Ground changed to Good after this race 'in consultation with the jockeys'.
Field race Stands' Rail to Centre with 6-8 Lane spread through halfway.
Unusual race with noone wanting to make the pace early and a slow 1st 1F with most held & some fighting for heads. CEllen (Kingscote typical) crack first and go to lead after 1.5f but soon joined & just headed by ST & stablemate WIce as their jockeys decided to let their horses go on a little. First 7 within less than 2L of lead at halfway. CD another length back and DA 4L off lead.
Slow early pace limites rating and first three are capable of higher ratings. Looking at the picture of the finish the limited physical types PIzzy (small & narrow bodied although with a little range in movement), Water Ice (small & compact) & MElliemay (typical smaller but neat Evans type & check if 7f+ works for her) are too close at the finish and not ones to follow. The picture shows the three best fillies going away at the end but the gaps they are pulling out could have been wider with a stronger pace.
Picture - of the finish.
Race has mixed record but has included better fillies in three of the last 4 years with the 2008 winner Group placed over 6f and 2009 winner Lady Of The Desert successful at Group 2 level. This year's first three seem a solid Group and should be able to compete at higher level. CL probably below medium sized but deep bodied and very neatly made. A newcomer but very professional and bought from a breeze up sale. First 5f winner for her sire and out of an 8F winner. Strong finish here and suspect she may be better as a 6f+ filly. Perhaps lack some scope to develop. Ridden by Martin Dwyer who rode last year's winner for Star Today's connections (usurped? by Fallon for that job). Here's a - Picture - of Dwyer explaing to the TV pundit how the thing over there with four legs is a 'professional racehorse' for her living & her owner is a professional footballer.
Elshabakiya a different physical type being taller and lengthier and not a full 5f type. Strong effort to lead and go 1L clear but caught late although still responding herself. Possibly racing on the worse part of the track on the cetre strip. Scope to develop further. Ran well enough to add weight to the thought that Maqaasid, who beat her at Sandown, is a serious prospect.
CD travelled best with a stiff pace at Bath and would have won but for running green. Review here confirmed she is actually a solid OR80+ rater on physical type rather than just beating rabbits at Bath. Shorter but lengthy body and better built than many by her sire (who gets taller, narrow types often). Made up ground on both the first two home here in the second half of the race and she (or her apprentice jockey) got intimidated by CL drifting over to chase Elshabakiya or she would have finised a bit closer. Good enough to win an Open maiden and with some size to develop further into the season.
CEllen again not really finish the race off and well behind Elshabakiya. A lesser size and type than that filly but not running up to the OR74+ type she ought to be.
Star Today running for trainer Meehan & owner Jaber Abdullah who won the race in 2009 with Lady Of The Desert (supported and expected to win) .Not that vibe this year. On physical type a similar sort of thing to the winner but lacking her athletic, balanced, movement and professional attitude. Green in the race after being allowed to get to the lead and unable to go with the later race efforts and finished with the weaker ones. Ought to be an ok sprinter around OR77-81 if she developed ok.
Dubai Affair adrift at the finish and too fizzy in the prelims and very inexperienced in the race. Trainer does not do strong debuts and this one not fit enough to go with the other issues. No surprise she finished where she did. But, although smaller a strong type and typical shape and set-up of her sire Dubawi. Trainer typically starts a few around this time and grisly debut efforts are common. But they tend to snap together notably 2nd times and definitely by third times. A non betting stable so these metamorphoses can be at long odds. 2 x 50/1 wins, 1 at 40/1 and another at 9/1 in the last 4 years off lost debuts to make the point (plus a 33/1 2nd last year, etc). The trainer has said in a Stable Tour that he thought this one was a bit better looking than her half sister Queen's Grace (one of the 50/1 STO successes in 2009) who went on to win a weaker Listed race. Whatever, a poor debut to stick in the notebook because, while small, she has enough bulk to improve a lot for STO or 3TO.
