Fast conditions on day and just above average pace for this race. 0.16s faster than Corporal Maddox ran in 2009 (on GGF) and late OR80s form in the full view. Race full of horses underperforming and not acting on the downhill and/or the left hand camber in the straight. 2nd & 3rd both unbalanced on hill and never really going forward fully. WR make a slow break and lose a couple of lengths and then make an effort to get to the lead on the rail. But, not setting a stiff pace and folded with little fight and eased late. Foghorn Leghorn run his typical competent race but probably barely an OR80s horse and lacking scope to develop. Approve held up off a less than taxing pace and on the rail. Cut-up on the rail as he tried to make his forward move and ended up switching out to centre track. Some ok progress and may be the best of these in the longer term. SL & SB a couple of Channon try-ons at Listed level and SL look too slow in this grade and SB held back and never put in race in a typically odd looking Culhane effort on a Findlay horse. SB seemed to be held off the back in an attempt at 'Deep Closing' which just does not work in this race. Aside from WR fading the 2nd to 4th at halfway moved forward one place (WR removed) to finish 1st to 3rd. How is holding a horse 6L off the back giving any possible chance to win? Which means the race is falling apart and Hannon's Casual Glimpse was another hanging left in the straight and not looking comfortable. This left the notably small High Award (even by his sire's standards) to win by running competent race. Led early and then waited to allow WR to give him a lead. Able to nip a couple of lengths clear as WR expired and presumably helped by his small, compact, frame, to handle the course. HA won the first 2yo race of the year in Ireland when his trainer had his string very forward and won the first 4 races on the first card of their season. Put in his place in a Conditions race and the Listed Marble Hill Stakes (10/1) since. Race does not have a good record of producing better class later winners and HA not appeal as a strong improver. More a case of 'job done' for Coolmore in getting a (soft) early Listed success for Holy Roman Emporer. |
