SUMMARY
Three quarter Headwind from the left. Field raced Far Rail of nearer Course.
Three pairs form up early with (rail first) Retainer & JG, Sikeeb & BP, EP & OB. First pair both going a little freely with Hughes allowing this as it never got out of hand and JG a bit freer and held at times. Last pair both lost a lot of ground early and 9 lengths off leader at halfway. 2nd pair around 3 Lengths back at Hf.
Solid pace without being strong into a headwind. JG stalling by inside 2F out with Retainer still going strongly. Hughes waited until just before 1F out to ask for effort on winner as he knew he had JG beaten. Immediate response and made look better as JG drop back. Never had to use whip and asked for another effort inside the final 1F and Retainer lengthen well and go on strongly to the line and looking reasonably unpressed. JG fading by inside last furlong.
Second pair always look to be close to their best pace for the race against the pace set. BP unable to make forward effort and outpaced by winner and faded in the last half furlong uphill. Head up inside last 1F and jockey still persisting with just a hint of not going forward mentally rather than already stalling.
Sikeeb look mentally immature and not that ready before race. Attended pace ok and able to make forward effort to last 1F.
OB the tallest in the group with a solid build. Lost ground at start and drop last as jockey allow time for him to get organised. Made real forward effort to close up the gap to the second pair inside 2F out. Still going forward at finish and being pressed into a Gap between stallers or might have finished better, Going on at the line.
EP lost ground at start and in last pair. Losing ground before 2F out and no response when slightly pressed by the jockey 1.5 furlongs out. Allowed to trundle home looking mentally green but heavy and stodgy mover on day.
Retainer supported as if he were useful and performance confirmed it. Going strongly throughout and slightly freely but never stopped and going on at the finish. Seemed to lengthen well in last furlong and has a head-forward, trier, attitude. Previous winners of race for Hannon have not been newcomers but of the last 4 three have won at Group level at 2yo and the other placed at that grade. This looked a Listed winner type and the trainer has a good set of early sprint 2yos.
Sikeeb a solid debut and not look ready for day. Probably not a 5f horse and finished in front of faders and green ones and not in the class of the winner. Up to open maiden winner class but see how he performs next time.
OB made a very promising debut and would have been a strong second chasing the winner if more knowing. With the size to believe he can develop well. Trainer ran Iver Bridge Lad (Listed winner in race in 2009) on it's 2nd outing.
BP ran ok and fade in the last half furlong in a more typical way of Hannon runners on FTO (after the previous 5 have all won). Presume opn maiden class.
JG a compact, under medium, sprinter type and typical ready early type. Ran poorly in Ireland in late March and trainer took break from 2yo runners after the Brocklesby runner ran poorly. This run marked the first of a batch of return runners and seemed a negative and perhaps whatever the stable issue is it may not be resolved fully. JG went along a little freely with a better horse but faded too early even given that. Hughes on the winner was having to wait to make his effort with JG already fading by the final furlong. He should have been fading in the last 0.5F uphill normally.
Early Applause for Barry Hills who has had a slow start to the season and had his first winner of the year on the card. Trainer used to run high class juveniles at the meeting, males & females, and many proved up to Group class. Last year he just ran a moderate filly and the best colt started at Windsor. This year he has no filly running and EP looked underdone, mentally and physically. A shorter, bulky type of sire Royal Applause that has produced a lot of useful 2yos. But the effort her and the tame fade was a negative even given the preparation level. Jockey Hills typically 'easy' but hard to see this one as much better than open maiden level on this when he snaps together. But, with the trainer record one to check how he develops.
