Field race Far Rail but in banks of 3-5 horses with an Average pace at best so not drawing the field out lengthways. Whole field of 18 spread over just 9L at halfway. Halfway positions versus final placings tell a story of a usable pace which meant the front rank of horses mostly all stayed there and making ground difficult. The first 4 after 1F were the first 4 at halfway and at the finish. But WH took 2F to work over from wide draw to join HB (rail) & HK and Standout drop behind them as they formed up. As often seems to be the case off an average or slower pace the front line of 3 seemed to go away from the others late on more than you would expect and aided by the comfortable lead. An element of 'Chicken & Egg' in this. Did they pull away because of the loose-in-the-lead effect or because they were the best 3 horses and their comfort at the pace meant they got to the front anyway in the early jog. A mixed story probably. First three home within a Neck of each other at halfway and a three-way photo at the line with two Heads the distances. Not a lot of change. Standout lost about a length to them in the last 2f & Slim Shadey about 1.5L although he made places with I Scream fading and the limited Titus Two losing a bit more ground. Not a race that tends to produce much in the way of later Maiden winners with the top priced horse in this year's field at £15,000. Last year 23 horses spread across 2 divisions produced 1 later Maiden win (in a joke of a fillies' event at Chester), 4 Auction Events (i.e. similar level to this race or worse) & 4 who won in Claimers or Sellers. The front of the field tends to be a bit over OR70 and a clear winner might by OR80s kit. Looking at the horses and the SPs this year's race seemed to have enough pace in to get the competitive ones to the front and the weaker profiles at the back. The front three are probably just over OR70 types and fit the profile of ok to win Auction races but need to find a soft Open Maiden to win. HK a solid size and given a tender ride LTO to be third. Trainer gets intermittent winners and they tend to need runs to develop to win (after a wholly uncharacteristic 2 from 4 FTO record in 2004). Type that will probably run a lot in nurseries and find a level to compete well at. WH slightly mark up because cam from wider draw and sweaty and racing a bit too freely. Battled well, improved from debut and has a little scope to improve the rating. HB the fourth Coakley debut of the year and this strong third adds to two wins. Trainer had a good year in 2009 with 3 winners from just 5 horses and seems to be ont he way to bettering that. The batch of strong debuts this year seems to have finally got him mildly noticed by a wider audience. The fifth debut runs tomorrow so he has a batch ready this year. HB a good size and strong and can improve his rating. Count back from the OR72ish level for where the others fit in OR terms unless you believe some of them can do better than they showed. Interesting story surrounding the three Hannon fillies and you would look to Hannon to turn 1-2 of them into Auction winners. Standout ridden by Moore but he does get the first string over Hughes at times. Filly given a typically 'difficult' ride on debut by Jamie Spencer where he, imagine this, found himself out the back on her and doing that thing where he looks like he he is wrestling an Anaconda rather than riding a horse. He then packed it in early. But support in the morning and early on in the Market (the hype got out of hand and her price settled back after reality seeped into the thinking, 18 runner field, some unknowns, etc). Given an attacking ride by Moore but not good enough. Solid upper OR60s. Cheers the Hughes ride for Hannon and drifted a bit in the Market. 2nd rank early wide but lose ground after 2F as green and drop to last pair. 7L+ off the lead at Halfway. Beaten just over 6L at the finish so had made a bit of ground on the front three who finished the race off ok and they had pulled out 1L+ on most of the reat of the field. Ok promise. The 3rd string Whodathought even greener and driven along from early and raced wide in Centre track on her own for much of race. Check NTO. Titus Two small and a Paddock negative on debut. Well placed but unable to even hold his position and a poor run. Trainer's old mate Alan Munro up at Redcar riding one for Channon in a similar race & 2 for Chris Wall and a bad sign for this one. Some possibilities for Auction level winners behind and the sort of Video review that can get you vaguely interested in a number because field not spread that far and a lot of jockeys 'underactive'. Slumbering Sioux given an easy time and lost ground before the efforts started by being hampered and kept threatening to make more ground than she did if the jockey had let her. |
