Stalls Stand' side of outer Course. Field race off rail. Pace seem solid for first 2F without being too hard. But, line of three form up after 2F with (from inside) BB, Wafeira & KS within a neck of each other. They seemed to react to each other and lifted the pace which had HT & IG niggled along and slightly losing ground. Good decision by jockey Drowne on ST at this point to recognise the pace taking off so dropped ST back. More than 4L off lead at halfway having been sat just behind the leading line after 2F. GQ very green and losing ground from early on. Off the back of the group at halfway and 7-8L off lead with jockey quiet. 3-4L behind ST at that point and beaten 4L+ by that one. To probably make the point that GQ getting to 3rd wasn't a storming finish 'once the penny dropped' but plugging on a bit better but still green. Picking her way through the early faders and the softened up leading three. KS the first runner of season for Luca Cumani. Early runners tend to be a mix of development types for Nurseries (probably OR70s limited) and occasionally better class ones if he has them. The better class ones can still be brought along as development projects although sometimes are allowed to win a maiden early and then try higher class races. His first runner in 2008 was Mabait who won a late season Nursery off OR72 and is currently rated OR108 after relentless improvement over a 20 month period. His first runner in 2009 was Start Right who finally won a late season nursery off OR81 having started on OR79. He has only run once at 3yo. His second runner in 2006 was Sanbuch who accidentally won a maiden STO at 12/1 and was too good at that stage to be able to bring through slowly to work up the OR ratings. Sanbuch reached a peak rating of OR110 over 12f at 4yo and started over 6f so the Cumani approach can be a modified version of the Prescott '3yo Stayer Set-up' in some ways. KS has a pedigree that should stay 8f+ in time but on the evidence of this run seems a competitive 2yo they will try to win a maiden with rather than the slower development. Good size, attended the Line-of-3 most comfortably and did best of that pace line. Should develop well and more quickly than the slow burn variety for the stable. Wafeira a lighter, smaller model (less substance than Bold Bidder for eg) and less scope to develop. Seems OR70s and vulnerable to better types in maidens and still not putting a professional race together. |
