Rail in on Far side for first 4F making a narrower track. Stalls centre and 12 of 14 runners form up and race in group on Cent to Far Side of strip. This group quite wide spread over track. Hughes on WDan drawn high and has made moves over to the stands' rail before on 2yos. Switched right from the stalls but only get as far as Centre to Stands' strip. WD pulling up from 2F out and reported lame after the race. Probably the case that Hughes felt something was not right from early on having never completed the move right over to the rail and not following the pace of main group. 8L behind the overall leaders after 2F and 10L at halfway. This produced a real problem for his stablemate CC who followed him over to the Centre to Stands' strip and sat in behind him. When WD pulled up this left CC 11-12L off the leaders and on his own. Odd looking mixed pace to race. The main group seemed to go an average pace, at most, for the first 3.5F with Dortmund & TS both breaking well and leading their parts of that group. With most of the runners wanting to be held up Dortmund & TS given a 3L+ start over the others when they came together as a Leading pair around 3F out. Dortmund just ahead at this point but never travelling smoothly and TS more balanced and going better. Jockey on TS decide to head Dortmund before the 2.5F out mark and this kicked the race off early (2F out efforts are typical). So the race for the main group should be read as a 2.5F+ extended effort with the two leaders given a 3L start. They made the most of this and TS finished more strongly but the 2nd rank still closing on him late. Stronger ones from 2nd rank in main group as efforts made not make ground on leading pair until they folded back a little late on. But, Hamlool (look reaching galloper and stayer), FTC (solid effort) & WDream closing up to the front 2 in the last 0.5F. Others in main Group either outpaced through lack of ability, or inexperience, and fade back after the efforts they could raise. Race fit UD held up and able to make a bit of progress around the newcomers before fading. Both Perrett newcomers unable to go with efforts and fade. KO seemed to be going ok and starting from a similar point to Hamlool & FTC but a minor effort before fading. Just looking at the main group you would say an average pace for 3.5F and then an extended late race effort period produced a race where it was hard to make ground with and the leading pair safe because of the 3L for free they were granted. The rest of that group stretched and folded in just modest amounts in line with ability, readiness, how active the jockeys were, etc. The Changeover Point in the Group probably between FTC & WDream and anything behind WDream needs an excuse to be Open Main winner rating level. Which is all very 'nice' but then what is Cult Classic up to? Green throughout the race and dropped last and a bit adrift at one point as he wrestled with the script. Deposited 11L off the lead and on his own as the efforts were going in the main group. If he had faded back and not been sighted again then fair enough. He spends a lot of the last 2F looking clueless and rolling left hand at points. Jockey Moore is a bit more active than some but there he is at the finish going on more strongly than anything and might have won if it had been 7F and TS was really stalling rather than being eased. Either racing on the stands side was a going advantage and being off the pace more of a positive than it looked or Cult Classic did something 'Different'. The race has produced later Group winners in each of the last 4 years (2 last year when still at 6f) and perhaps CC is the best candidate this year. |
