Rail out by 10yds for entire length of race = longer race distance than in minimum configuration. Just an average pace but with the usual long tail of green and slower ones a well spread field by halfway. The trouble caused by a big field of horses trying to find a position after the start on the run to the bend dragging a lot back and those who went forward early get even further clear. Toolain in 3rd but 3L off lead, Jamhoori 5-6L back and Dr Darcey (niggled) at more than 7L back in 5th. Rest of field spread over another 10-12L and already out of the race for the places in any meaningful way given the pace set. Ecliptic taller and light framed and not look type to improve strongly. Toolain a different model being shorter and heavily built but moves athletically with it. Late race veer look like inexperience rather than nastiness. Looked a higher class horse and one to follow Race has mixed record on overall quality and 2009 race only produce one later winner. This edition look a bit stronger and later winners usually in first half of race at finish. SStar probably helped to finish second by racing prominently and suspect in Open Maiden next time. Jamhoori, Tarjeyh & Aspantau all struggle to raise any extra pace but plugging on to line and look like stayers. The Tregoning pair appealing as having more development potential. Purification talked up by the trainer and still going forward at the finish for moderate asking from jockey. Check NTO. PV on STO and halued back early when caught wide on the track. Persistent progress through the others to remote 5th for minor asking from jockey. See how he goes next time but seems the type the trainer is bringing along as a nursery type. Whether the field has strong prospects for Open Maiden winners behind the first 2 is open to question so anything further back than the first 4-6 places needs to improve a lot. Ahlaain a possible given the overall problems. Green and fizzy overall and unseated jockey to the post. Slow start from the widest draw and never put into the race. But, first runner of season for solid trainer and the first batch would typically include 2-3 of his season winners (4 individual winners his highest total). So, a prospect to develop and might have had valid excuses here. |
