SUMMARY
Stalls Centre and field race centre with wide spread. Below average pace to race with many pulling and fighting for heads in first half of race. SB race Centre to Far Side to halfway away from others and in the leading line but racing a bit more settled than the larger group did.
LG fizzy in prelims and break first and led early but immediately hard held. WIce & Mawjoodah also in this leading line in the first furlong and also held back and pulling and resenting this to various degrees. ATRM (lowest rated in phys type in Review) in this leading line after 0.5f but racing in a more settled manner and left leading this larger group as the other three eventually hauled back. MEx race most freely tried to be held up behind the pace and FFH and climbing over the back of the (held) leading at points.
FF lose 2L+ at the start and recover to other comfortably given the modest pace and jockey allow her to go through to the leading line. SS similar loss at start and then run more freely when tried to be restrained. OWOL take 2f to settle as held up behind and RL dropped to last with less struggle with the jockey.
First 10 through halfway within 2.5L of the lead with RL at just under 4L.
Some mixed feelings about race. Modest pace so slower time and moderate performance level. But, first 6 home all beleivable as being the upper side of OR70 in review and Mawjoodah also solid enough. SB not the best physical type but the most tractable and the hardest trier in the race so got home.
RL held up off modest pace and made comfortable progress to get to a challenging position. Given than move she ought to have got by SB but RL either green or not want to go by and SB battling away. Upgrade RL effort given she came from last in a short sprint comfortably but a niggle that she might not want to go on to win.
Apazine another to look reluctant at times and probably not one to trust to repeat this in a faster race.
OWOL another to race with head up at times and not really seeming to help the jockey at times. Has been going on at the finish in all her races now and hampered (again here). Another with a profile as one that hints at ability but may well never put it all together for you.
More interest in FF and just about the best type in the field. Ran just about well enough to think she will snap together STO for and OR75+ effort.
Also more inclined to give MissEx another chance than Apazine or OWOL. Lack quality but a solid size and attitude. Raced more freely than any in field during the slow bit and found a solid effort until stalling in the last 1F. Better than she showed here.
Mawjoodah shorter, lengthy with ok build but not fully convincing in Review and an uneasy favourite. Another to race freely anf faded much earlier than, MEx, for example. 5th in the Listed level Hilary Needler on debut and her defeat means the 2nd, 5th & 8th have all been beaten in Maidens since. The front of the race often has fillies who are not even OR80s and this year is not looking solid. The Listed Marygate Stakes (recent invention) in Mid May was even thinner and you wonder what the point of a second Listed race was when the Hilary Needler was often won by an OR80s filly in a good year. It is mindboggling to think that the winners of these races appear in a sales catalogue with the same highlighting (and inferred quality) as a horse like Tranquil Tiger (farming Listed races on the AW) who really is higher class and is having to see off a bunch of proven OR95+ types to win a Listed race (not beating OR70s fillies and worse who cannot even be trusted to win a maiden if there is anything vaguely worthwhile in it.)
