Rail out by around 17yds for entire distance so field racing mid track in effect. Pace too strong and 1st & 2nd 'closers' to various degrees with MC not able to go with the leaders when the pace pressed on but stayed on back to them later on. Pace forced by STO Dubai Affair who was fizzy in the prelims again and had been worse on debut. This maiden unusual in being a high prize money (and therefore Class 2) and a memorial race for owner breeder Bridget Swire. Dubai Affair bred by the Swire's so here to represent the person the race is named for. Presume they wanted her to get involved and show up the colours rather than be anonymous but that added to the horse's natural enthusiasm perhaps got matters a bit out of hand. AS look smaller in group and last run probably over-rated. Fitst three home all look believable as OR80+ types and all show something a little different in context. MC bigger in group and lack some pace as pace upped just after halfway. But respond strongly with prolonged effort to overhaul FM. That filly (FM) travelled like the best horse through the race. Able to travel comfortably with the increased pace that that put MC under pressure. Get to lead but early race efforts (including crossing over from wide draw) told and stalling late on and allowing MC to get back to her. Given a different race shape and FM on STO and you would expect her to beat MC over a faster 6F test. Jaahiz running into the back of horses on the rail to halfway and lost a bit of ground as he was hauled back just as the pace increased which got him a little detached from the front rank. Jockey just ask for average effort between 2f out to 1f pole as he gradually switched him left from the rail to centre track. Asked for stronger effort in the final furlong and too time to respond. But his effort from the 0.5F mark to the finish looked to be more than just plugging on to stalling & fading horses. Seemed to raise a real forward effort to make 1-2L extra and going on quite strongly at the finish and agead soon after the line and a struggle to pull him up. Looked like real promise for a shorter, bulky type of his sire. |
