Field race in two Groups with narrow set tight to the stands' rail. Far side group more widely spread and hints of a Centre-Far Side Group at points. Solid pace and Stands' Side 2L clear of leader on Far Side (GD) at halfway. Halfway positions versus final placings suggest pace a too strong to allow pacemakers to get home fully. On the Stands' side only the strongest pair close up survive to be well beaten 3rd (TMT, big, mature US filly) & 4th (Rad'ge, Group winner in Ireland). Lesser types close up on stands' side fade notably. Far side similar with first three home 5-&7L back at halfway. Best run on Far Side from Hooray who was 3L off lead at halfway and made good effort to be clear leader on that side inside 2F out but stalling by 1F out and headed by EG on far side before the last 0.5f. In effect Hooray made similar forward effort & move to TMT & Rad'ge on the stands' side. EG coming from similar starting point to Memory but lack that one's extra kick in the last 1F. Hughes, enlightening as always, said after the race that he was not going as well as Margot Did inside the last 2F so tried to hang on to that one as MD made a taking effort to lead. Jockey said Memory oustayed MD in the end and she could run 8f now and needs further. Memory catching MD the final fold of the pressers and more forward horses making efforts then peaking and stalling back into the closers. MD shown high cruising speed and real forward effort in lesser races and still showing something different here. Gained 1-2L quickly on Memory with initial effort. Hold that effort up later and might have hung on. Trainer Bell said she had Breezed poorly at the sales which is why she had been so cheap. Since she came to his stables she had been a natural from the start. Memory take longer to get going than MD but then show strong effort to the last 1F and progress through to second. TMT ran too freely and Fallon again not able to hold one fully. Previous day Stone Of Folca had pulled Fallon from being in last place to work to a challenging position too early. Fallon had been flown to the US to ride some of the horses he was riding here for trainer McPeek. Story or Hype included one saying Fallon had ridden work on Noble's Promise (5th in the St James's Palace at 3L behind Canford Cliffs) in the US and had been unable to catch this filly on the 3yo Colt. Poor run from Al Sharood who raced closest to centre track. Unless that was a real disadvantage then her Newmarket win may be over-rated. Check how the third from that race goes in a maiden on June 22nd. |
