SUMMARY
Fast conditions on day and difficult to make ground. FF given a good front running ride to enable victory. Cross in front of others to lead and then settle pace to bend. Not hassled in the straight and not have to start his final effort until inside the last 2F. Solid effort to line and able to hang on with only better opponent having minor difficulties. Has looked a lower OR70s type and found a good spot here and the right Run Style for the day.
PK probably a 5-10lbs better horse than FF but unable to run him down in a 1.5F sprint although making around 2L so a solid effort. Run a bit free early and held in second rank on the rail. Still on the rail and blocked at 2F out and jockey took early decision to switch out wide. He had to get outside RoS to get a clear run. This gave FF the break he needed to hold PK off. Solid enough effort from PK in race set-up.
PK run creates an interesting question over whether the maiden he made his debut in is 'Working Out' or not? This second place means those that those who finished 2nd-5th in that race have run 5 times since for no wins. So it isn't working out? But, the second was a clear second next time in a strong maiden and PK was 3rd and ran ok here. The 4th was beaten a nose STO and was 10L clear of the 3rd. The 5th that day was a similar Channon trained type to FF who has run a solid second place STO (to a high class horse) and then 4th 3TO (one suspect effort in the 4 but probably beaten by 3 solid horses and a number of Channon horses have run poorly recently). So it might be working out ok and those 4 might still all win by season's end.
RoS a shorter type but well built. Made similar effort to leader until stalling.
SA a typical Johnston debut and difficult to read for future given the race set-up. Green overall and a slow start after getting unsettled in the stalls. Getting back to the group wehn clipping heels and losing 2L+. Which put him too far behind in a race where making ground difficult. Some response in the final sprint but looking green and unbalanced at times. Narrower type and moves like a galloper so a 2F sprint on firmer ground well designed to make him look like his is in the wrong job. Give him 8F and slower ground an remove the greenness and he could look quite good. Run him around the bend at Thirsk over 7f on faster going and he might look pretty slow and be 4th again.
DE also got behind through slow start but less signs of life in the last 2F.
