SUMMARY
Sunny day with light breeze as half tailwind from Left. Both 2yo races on day saw good numbers of 2yos hanging left at some point after halfway = Firmer going? This Novice faster than 2yo Claimer by 0.86s carrying 13lbs more. Two divisions of older handicap won in 58.6 & 59.19 by OR72/73 horses carrying 10 & 9lbs less than this winner.
Good pace and Line-of-4 form up soon after 1f gone with Lord Avon on Rail, BBear 1 wide, AFeeling 2Wd and Coconut Ice on outer. Misty Morn & BSpirit in behind this line with BS going too freely and fighting for head after 2F.
BB & AF go on together inside and hook up and duel to the line. CIce hang left as the efforts made. Some response inside the final furlong. Lord Avon left behind inside 2F out and fade notably.
BBear the fastest Evans 2yo and this a race he targets with them ont he way to the Lily Agnes. Notably short and compact little 'Bull' type. Very mentally mature and a competitive attitude. Gave everything in Duel and you could suggest AF mentally gave way to BB in the duel although trying hard. AF a taller type with more length. Not that strongly made but athletic mover. Debut win over-rated but comes out best horse with winner having 5lb apprentice on.
Coconut Ice the first stronger debut from Dascombe. Taller, lightly made filly but with the typical range of movement that the trainer buys. Attended pace comfortably but hanging left as the efforts made. Only stalled later on after some response when balanced.
LPClub a similar physical type to CIce but ran entirely different race. A little green early and perhaps unable to go pace. Made some forward effort inside 2F out but then hung left. Plugged on through the stallers in the final when balanced.
Boundless Spirit the best type in the field and sttod out in a field of mostly Chestnuts of Average builds at most. A typical, heavy build 2yo that trainer Smart Buys. Similar to Able Master for e.g. Ran a solidly promising race. A little slow start but recovered comfortably. Then go lit up and ran too freely. Travelling well in second rank inside 2F out as leading pair press on. Make real forward effort to 3rd. Lack of fitness & free running seemed to tell and faded in the last half furlong. Seems very likeable type and one the follow. [Update 19/4 = Trainer Bryan Smart interviewed at Pontefract & asked whether he had any horses to look forward to. Said he had an un-named 2yo by Monsieur Bond who looked very good and would run as soon as he was named, sold?. Said that the MBond 2yo works with Boundless Spirit and was better than him.]
Misty Morn a tiny filly and another competent debut for recent batch of AD Brown 2yos but Limited.
Paul Midgley ran two with AWKind the 1st string. Ok size byt not fit enough and too fizzy. Given and educational into and taught to settle. Outpaced inside 2F out but not stop and just asked to plug on to finish Hands n Heels. Might be usable to mid OR60s.
Choose Wisely a £5k 2yo buy and expected a small one. But amongst the biggest in the field, well built and masculine. The breeze-up prices seem well down versus quality this year. On the downside a lengthy body and perhaps a bit long and boaty. Too wound up here and needed (really rather than just job creation) 2 handlers to keep clamish. If he can move his size adequately then can be OR70+ type.
Lord Avon Medium size and Ok build and just ok neat. Typically well drilled and able to lead early and get to rail. Expired a bit too quickly for forcing pace and suspect on that. OR70ish if stays 5f.
Reachforthestars 1st runner for Michael Dods and one of expensive buys for major owner Andrew Tinkler. Trainer overprepares 2yos and debut wins are common. This one neatly made (in the Balding style) but lightly made and unconvincing in power terms. Not as thoroughly fit as trainer's 2yos can be FTO despite build. Added cluelessness to be adrift early. Made some response into the pack later. Might get into OR70s but not far into that range early. Almost seemed like a 'Marker' run for trainer who must have a set of better 2yos in his bigger string tis year.
Novabridge won a slow race on heavy and never going pace comfortably here on firmer going. Jockey eased his 1F out when clear he was not handling the conditions.
GF & RS seem OR50s at best and RS too green here and perhaps unwilling. GF small and neat and prepared well but limited.
