Maiden on the course's major flat meeting of the year. Produced a stronger race than usual on profile. Pace not that strong and final time not indicate better race. Leading pair that set pace first and 2nd in the betting but not get home which migt suggest pace too strong. This pair hooked up early and raced too freely and while held by their jockeys. Compounded this by kicking the final efforts effort by halfway and at least 0.5f early. DB seem a typical favourite the Market settles on but with unproven credentials and poor value. Placed form came from a 4 runner race for newcomers where he had looked too slow to deal with the others and not see 6F out. That was moderate form anyway. Did best of the leading pair of pressers and kept going for the full 2F after making his effort but that was early so not get home here. Other runners queueing to get around him anyway. TC ridden by Fallon (at meeting to ride Cumani handicappers) for Mark Johnston and that seemed to get Market unnecessarily interested. Trainer struggling to get 2yos winners and not had a worthile debut this year. Support might suggest an ok one and check NTO. Fallon unable to hold him fully and only make a 1f+ effort unlike DB who made the full 2F. AM for trainer Smart who gets regular debut wins with his competitve earlier 2yos. Said he thought she might be a Queen Mary filly in early season but had taken longer to develop. Presume she is OR85+ and will try Listed+ in next two runs. CS second string to DB and typical for Market to over-react and trimmed in price. Took time to get going and also to get balanced enough to switch out to a clear run. Going on as strongly as anything in last 0.5f. Indicator of lower level form and need others to improve to be Ok? Or a slow learner who is a 7f+ Nursery developer? Maverik having to wait to get a run from 2F out until around the 1F pole. Good response when clear but AM already clear and unable to make ground on her. Indication of CS stronger finish that he got past Maverick towards the line while that one still going forward. DA run better than final position suggests. Made ok forward move and 3rd at 1F out but faded and eased. Another where the SP might be partly 'Second String' affected. |
