Rain on day and going changed to GGS. Clerk of Course had been thinking about watering course on run-up to Meeting after three, mostly dry, weeks. Time indicates at least GGS and perhaps a bit slower. Pontefract 5f times since the start of 2004 range from 62.13 (by Group winner Our Jonathan on GF in 2009) up to 69.84s. The slowest time was by Society Music in the equivalent race in 2004 on Soft. The recent times for the race are 2005 = 68.69s on Soft, 2006 = 67.16s by Eloquent Rose on GGS, 2007 = 64.84s on GFF, 2008 = 69.67s on Soft & 2009 = 63.38 on FGF. Closest match seems Eloquent Rose who ran 67.16s on same going description. She won a Novice race STO & ended the season rated OR80 after being unplaced when tried in Listed races. Geesala represent trainer that gets FTO wins in Mid-April & a little later with useful types. Maggie Lou at Haydock on April 26th in 2008 an example. Market usually a bit shorter but this a stronger race. This type debut success for stable usually indicate an OR85+ filly & Maggie Lou at OR87 in later season. Geesala a strong type and has pedigree suggesting 6f may be better. Presume will be OR88+ at some point and run in Listed+ in early to mid-season. Abidhabudubai for John Quinn who is a classic 'Front Loading' trainer with the first runner eah year the competitive winners. Debut wins are uncommon and a solid FTO followed by a targeted STO win typical. He had the 3rd in the equivalent race last year who won STO. Good debut and clearly cpable of win & probably OR75+. Little Miss Take another solid debut from Dascombe although have not had the high-class on wiring the field yet and tight fit. Interesting run and came over as a stayer rather than a speed filly. Lost ground early spooking at something on the rail. Took time to get going in the straight when the efforts were made. Switched to centre field for the final furlong and finished as strongly as the winner and going forward at the finish. Perhaps not a speed type but another later winner in the right conditions. The edition of the race looked stronger than normal and it can often be very empty and produce only Nursery, Claimer & Seller winners. Later Open Maiden winners have been few. But, the first three here look solid at that level and some usable types behind. Silca Conegliano the most expensive in the field and another solid debut for Channon although not looking fully tuned. Trainer had FTO winner of race last year in weaker version. Solid run although perhaps a bit smaller than medium. But, another with solid prospects of an early Maiden win if Channon fillies are behind schedule. Majestic Style worth another chance on Firmer going. Led after 1F from the Widest draw and then unable to hold her position on the steep uphill section. This part of course will catch out the leggier or underpowered ones not carrying their weight. She has looked a type that will rely on athletic movement so an uphill slog on Softer going not ideal. [Update - Stable Rep lodged a WTRB Report with Stewards saying MS was unsuited by the GGS going] BAGL again got adrift in last before plugging on to the front of the Gap back from the 1st 4. Has some OR60s bility but difficult to support a horse that gives the rest so much of a start. Sapphire Girl got shuffled back early so some excude. But, went through race like a sub OR75 type and only a brief effort into the straight. Madam M'z a slow start and driven into an early response and then again wide on the steepest part. Unable to make much ground against those problems. Typical, smaller, compact type the trainer used to run early and could win the weak versions of this race when it was an Auction event. Dods' debut wins in April seem less ready in last few seasons and FTO wins start in May. Two runners this year too green to get to usable position from stalls. Overall summary would be tht the best 4 fillies got to the front and all have Open Maiden winner levels. Gap back from them to a plugging on BAGL who is OR60s usable type. MStyle may be better than fillies she finished with on better going. Hints of ability from others but perhaps more the usual Ability level futures for the ruck in this race. |
