4mm of watering after racing previous day when times fast. Warm day with stiff breeze. Rail in so field racing up the normal stands' rail. Advanatage of racing up that rail still seem to be in place. First two home have comfrotable time getting to rail from highest draws and raced closest to it throughout. Instructress early runner, in index, for trainer who runs the competitive ones first and often gets strong debuts and FTO wins (including a sibling of this one that got sold for big money after the success). Jockey Ahern said after this race that trainer Cowell had said she could win on debut at Warwick. But, drawn wide there and a slow start and jockey decided not to get her involved. This race a good example of how the draw can make the difference to the draw. Slow out of the stalls here and then pick-up to the right and lost a bit more ground. Fortunately her draw meant that slowness left her second rank on the favoured rail after she responded to the urgings from the jockey to get on with it. Put her in the outside stall and see her do the same and she would not have won. Raced head up for last 2F and just about going forward. Looks a bit quirky and trainer tends not to progress these fillies much after the win. Welsh Inlet got an ideal set up for her frontrunning here with an unpestered run up the rail. GT another competitive one as the 5th runner of the season for the trainer. Started 2009 with a set of usable ones although they could take time to win. NCS a short price again and a good lesson in a number of things. She cost nothing at the sales and Paddock Review on debut showed her to be very small but neatly put together, well prepared and a trier. Which means if the trainer gets on with early (like David Evans does with a whole raft of similar ones) they might pinch a race early. But, they are not going to improve and vulnerable to anything bigger. Her debut 2nd was in an empty race and worth little as form. She demonstrated another problem for the little ones next time when dragged along in a pace war at uphill Bath and faded badly. The second LTO was in another empty race and assisted by some Deep Closing into tired rabbits down the rail. Here she is in this race vying to be favourite again. No excuses here other than perhaps running a bit wide of the rail but just plain not good enough. Hannon pair at similar SPs and given different rides. RR a little green from a wide draw but able to slot in behind midfield. Given a quiet time in the last 2f and perhaps still learning but perhaps waiting for nurseries. Choral worth another chance to show if she has ability. Slow start and green when asked to progress and switch away from the rail. Some progress before eased. |
