The 'Other' 5f Listed race at Sandown and never too sure what the point of it is. Royal Ascot 'Consolation'?. Whatever it tends to fall through the 'planning' cracks and often produces a thin field. Recent winners include Light The Fire & Western Art and a response of 'Who?' is acceptable. In that context this a typical field but with an exception. Zebedee was touted as the Hannon's 'Fastest' 2yo in early season but with the rider that it did not mean he was the 'Best' (which is Strong Suit unless he something frighteningly good still in the garage). In his first two races Zebedee showed how tractable he was but also his high cruising speed. In each of his first two race the jockey was able to 'queue up' behind the leader towards the last 1F waiting to make his challenge. In each race the response was not immediate and it takes him 50+ yards to find top gear but then like putting a 'wind up' toy on the ground Zebedee then zips forward. Exactly the same here faced with horses who are borderline Listed class. Pace for the race only average with TTIG able to set an unpestered lead and run under control so did not turn the race into one of those uphill blasts at the course where the one 10L back at halfway and outpaced wins. Which set the race up well for Zebedee to show what he can do. Made the second best forward effort int he Norfolk but not fully see out the 5f. Suspect the jockey might try to hold him up longer in another 5f Group race like the Molecomb. Perfectly good prospect for that. The TV pundit on duty seemed adamant that Zebedee is not a 5f horse and should go to 6f. What he showed here was what he had done to make him the Hannon choice for the Norfolk at 5f so you presume he will continue at 5f. The reason he would move up to 6f is that 5f is perceived as the lesser quality end of 2yo racing by the Pattern Committee so oppostunities at high level peter out. TTIG again show a willing attitiude and battle on well once headed. Confirmed view that her last run was a real step forward.Jamesway has the same connections and sire as Arctic Feeling and he was considered 2-3L behind that one at season start. AF ran in a Novice race on the day with Jamesway here in the better race. Since AF had run in the Norfolk Stakes while Jamesway was winning his Novice race you suspect the ranking is still the same and Jamesway was here to place and AF in a race he was supposed to win. Jamesway looked imporved LTO and is a rangier type than AF but has not appeared to fill out much. Ran out of control here for 1F in early race as TTIG settle pace hindered his chances. Still able to make the 3rd best forward effort. |
