Going officially Firm but this a slower time and times in general on day not breaking standard. One exception in the race with better class horses in so partly quality related. Despite the 'Firm' the Going Stick only 9.5 at 7:00 am before racing and not much different from GF level at many tracks. Ugly race visually which certainly looked like a 'Firm' going race with a lot of horses feeling the ground, not letting themselves down and not really going forward. SIP a smaller, lighter filly and got a comfortable lead and difficult for others to make ground on the going. SIP look OR60s filly and has been decared for a seller (NR) and presumably shown enough for trainer to continue to try to find soft maiden. This look OR62-63 level effort. SIP assisted with getting a comfortable lead by number of other jockeys wanting to hold their horses up. FF, MT, FD & Sarangoo all race on inside and all held back. As SIP settle pace all four respond to some extent by pulling and some fighting for heads. Not much happened in the final 2F sprint as the halfway positions to final places show. Difficult to pick out which horses just plain struggling for pace and which not stretching out on the ground. Only 'Why They Ran Badly' report made after the race was by jockey on LD who said the horse hung right on the Firm ground. It would have been good to have some feedback on what the problem with MT was but no WTRB report and Stewards' did not ask any questions. Ran freely in the first half of the race and then not pick up in the last 2F. Possibly ground related. FF supported but set a very difficult task by Hughes. Held up 5L back of leader and then having to switch out to centre track to make a clear run. Made 3L+ back by 0.5F out and got to 2nd late as the stalling started. Blackleyf unco-operative overall. Refusing to go to the start and trainer at 1F pole trying to pull him onwards with the jockey dismounted. Nearer the start he had to be 'encouraged' behind the stalls by the handlers. Jogged through the race anonymously and going better than some at halfway. Tricky type and probably not showing full ability. |
