Sunny & Dry. Light breeze as a headwind. Broken race because of an overly strong pace and not helped by a 5 minutes+ stalls loading process. Mika Mica & Belle Bayardo drawn wide and both take a long time to load. Scommettitrice in stalls for lengthy period waiting for this became unsettled and then panicked and went down in stalls and taken out. Mica Mika given umpteen attempts to load and eventually Commercial (fizzy & immature in prelims) also panicked. Tend not to blame the horse too much for this as he had been in the stalls for ages and in the next stall to Scommettitrice who had already been removed. Commercial leant on the side for some time before panicking. Belle B. eventually forced in and rest of fileld continue to have to wait for MM. BB panic before this achieved and taken out. At which point you found it hard to believe MM was still being allowed to mess about with arm-waving being used to try to get him in. 2 of three WD were Ron Harris 2yos and the trainer has a moderate record developing 2yos. BB had completely blown the start on previous starts. Trainer had saddled the pair in the Racecourse Stables remote from the Parade Ring & they got to the Ring as the Jockeys were being asked to mount. A poor effort overall. So, a lot of horses stood around for ages and in a big field spread across the track. The Strong Pace was applied from the start with Scarlet Rocks steaming off from a wide draw to run down the Far Rail. 3 lengths clear before they had gone 2F and going too freely. Newcomer Bunce drawn towards stands' rail did well to get out and be second early but drifting towards centre track as racing alone. Stong pace meant only Master Macho in 3rd (on Far Rail alone 5 lengths back from SR) and newcomer Drawing Board in 4th (6 lengths+ back and racing alone behind Bunce within 10-12 lengths of lead. May Be Some Time in 5th after 2F but already, at least, 12 lengths back. Rest of field spread over another 15L and most driven along behind the frantic pace. Mica Mika break slowly, predictably but respond to be 7th after 2F at around 15 Lengths behind SR. Which means a peculiar race dynamic. Consider that MM ended up being beaten 10L at the finish. If he had done this by running in midfield then losing 5-6L over the last 2F then a duff effort. Here, he has actually made 5L on SR from halfway to the finish. This sort of pace war can produce a closing winner from Midfield, or even further back, at halfway but this race had no 'Midfield'. The pace meant only the first 4 were ever in the race and the rest were miles back and under pressure as, mostly newcomers. The winner as the 4th at halfway at 6L off the lead so the normal lengths back range for a Midfield closer. First four all fading in the last half furlong and rolling home together as a group as they had joined up close to the far rail. The 8L back to the 5th from 4th would normally be an obvious Garbage Gap if it had developed later in the race. Different set-up here and some of the well beaten horses had enough physical substance to be of some interest for the future. |
