SUMMARY
Hint of far rail bias on day. Winner here ran far rail and never stopped. Clerk of Course interviewed before racing and said there was no difference in effect in where you raced. Then said the Going Stick readings were 0.4 to 0.5 'Firmer' on the Far Side than the Centre or Stands Side. Starspangledbanner taken over to far rail early in the July Cup (in a way that got the jockey a 6-day ban) from a centre draw and set the pace attended the pace and never stopped.
Below average pace assist prominent runner on rail here. Close packed field through halfway with the last horse at just over 4L off the lead. 40/1 winner and 100/1 5th the only pair to race close to rail. Catfish assisted by way race was run but ok Open Maiden winner ability. Produce real forward effort and still going on at the finish. Second FTO winner of season for trainer and first has proved up to Listd class.
Ragsah given an (over-)confident ride by Dettori. Raced in centre track away from the rail and jockey delayed asking for effort until 1.5f out. Good forward effort to go away from the rest and close up to Catfish but unable to go by with that one still responding and going forward. No hint of negative attitude (two '2nds' do not necessarily mean a shirker) and set too much to do in just over 1F.
Race not spread abilities out fully and late race sprint off moderate pace not suit some. Along with the inexperience shown difficult to judge the rest of the field.
Our Gal supported in the weak morning Market but drift on-course. Quinlan stable shown better signs this season after some moderate years with 2yos. First Debut winner earlier this year since 2005 when they used to be profitable to follow. Just an ok effort after helping to set the moderate pace. Presume OR70s.
Then into the 'Rest' with lack of pace in race and lack of strong finishes not offering up any big clues. Probably some Open Maiden winners back in the field but more relying on the trainers involved to have sent ok ones to the course for this race. LJ would typically be ok for OR75+ given connections and an educational Fallon ride.
Sodashy seemed to be most assisted by crossing over to rail and starting the late race sprint from a forward place. Suspect in maiden NTO on form level here.
OWO still green and putting head to right and not going forward in late race sprint. The sort the Hannon's 'fix' at some point but 50/1 on debut before this not suggest a definie Open maiden winner.
Just using the 'connections' rather than what they showed here then TT & Apticanti should be of more interest for development. TT lose a lot of ground at start, race centre track and not really know what to do late on. Meehan typically sends solid one to start at Newmarket at 5-6f so she ought to be ok on that eveidence. His only two, intended, debuts at the Newmarket courses previously this season have been Black Moth (dual winner, ran in the Norfolk) & Arcano's brother El Muqbil. So TT is either ok or here as a bit of Fashion House marketing.
Apticanti given a severe hold-up ride in a slow race and the aim seemed to be only about teaching her to settle and not about expecting to get involved. Another with the right connections to be better than awkward 'battle' this race turned into.
