Field race Far rail and spread out across centre track in later race. Race notably faster than the 7f Group 2 event run, at a moderate pace, earlier in the afternoon. Stiff pace set and front half of race at halfway not able to finish the race off fully (stalling and fading by the end). Halfway positions versus final placings show that the solid higher weights (with usable ORs) able to be the stronger finishers having been held up as the prominent racers folded back. Hint of far rail bias on day. Witzend ran that rail to beyond halfway. Witzend seem to confirm the promise of his previous run despite the lower final rating, Traveled quite well to the final 1F and looked like he would be involved in the places until the late race fade. Sheila's Star the sole runner to run the far rail throughout. Outpaced soon after halfway and plugged on at her one pace to get back to 6th having dropped to 9th. Idiom & Liberty Cap both looked laughably over-rated for what they had actually achieved and good examples of how the BHA handicappers' methods are flawed. Both at longer odds despite the connections so most people knew they were on the wrong marks so why is the BHA guy so far off? Idiom perhaps a sufferer of the 'Newcastle' straight track issues. Races fall apart there in peculiar ways and reading the form needs someone to know exactly what strip (a few yards wide) a horse ran on because it can make huge differences (say, 10L+ at times). Idiom a clear winner there but in an ordinary time. But, the BHA guy has to take things literally. LC 20/1 and second string for his win but it was in a Newmarket maiden with Godolphin horses behind so that has to be OR80+ for the BHA guy no matter what the actual form is worth. Newmarket maidens vary hugely in quality and placed horses can range from sub OR60 into the OR90s (that is really running to OR90s in absolute terms and not in imaginary handicapper terms). Rating Newmarket maidens as if they were set quality levels is ludicrous. |
