SUMMARY
Rail out = extra distance.
Another Chester race where the importance of the draw and getting a good position affected the pace and the start. 5 horses going forward from start and in a line of 5 after 0.5f. DB not look full 5f in previous races and on rail but unable to stop the nippier CK forcing past him and dropping him back to second rank on the rail. Given the stiff pace this should have been a reasonable place to be for DB. But, lack of pace meant he had to be bustled along to keep up so never travelling comfortably so a late race stall.
CK had to work hard to get to the lead on the rail but able to control the race after that. Solid forward effort in the final 2f and battled hard with EW but softened up and fading late.
EW ran better than result suggests. On the outside of the Line of 5 early from a wide draw and jockey perisited with going forward. Ended up running 2 wide through the race which is usually suicidal. Good effort to be able to pick up off that run to challenge CK and eventually wear her down but softened himself up and stalling late on.
The overall pace and early churn meant a race where a Stalk & Pouncer running the rail had a chance to close. MM on his 13th run and normally a pace presser. Only time he had not been in the first 3 through halfway after debut was on GGS going when he never got going. Went forward early but wide in the line of 5 after 0.5f and jockey held him back and dropped to the rail (cutting off Chestival with that one stumbling badly). Ended up 4-5L off the leading line settled on the rail. Pace strong enough to fold the front of the race back so that a normal, competent, effort from him produced a comfortable win. A race where looking at the draws of the first two home saying the draw doesn't matter and you can win from anywhere. But, as ever, a meaningless conversation without talking about Race Pace & Run Style. The Draw is not a single Golden Ticket.
WIn another to force forward and end up running 1 off the rail in the leading line of 3. Unable to go with CK & EW as they produced an effort.
Tilliemint has been move lively and a pace presser since running in blinkers. But sleepy here and a slow break compounded by being squeezed out by WIn going right from the stalls. Adrift and, unlike MM, not running settled and waiting for the prominent runners to eventually come back to you. Being driven along to try to make ground into an already stiff pace.
BAsh held back from a wide draw and slightly hampered by the UR and never involved. Promise on debut followed up by two lesser efforts but not really put a race together yet. Still looks more likely to be a development type solid sprint handicapper for the trainer than moderate.
