Stalls Stands' Side and field race within 8-10 Lanes of rail until the usual later race hanging left from the leaders. Small field but an excellent race of it's type thanks to a bit of, ill judged, overly strong pacemaking by Spencer. Field under pressure from early on by the pace set with leader 2.5L clear through halfway and LR in second and another 2L+ clear of the others with OS 7L+ back of lead after a slow start and a being hampered after 0.5F when trying to recover. Lady Royale has shown OR75+ ability in previous races and an above average ability to extend her effort in later race. But, she has looked to lack full 5F pace and got unbalanced at times and then show strong finishes. Tried in cheekpieces before but that was at Newcastle and a write-off because of the vagaries of the straight course there. First run in blinkers here and ridden by a jockey with a good record on sprinters. On the evidence of the jockey's effort here this is because he keeps it simple and gets the horse into a rhythm and judges the pace well and knows when to kick. Presumably helped by the blinkers and a flat course LR able to chase the strong pace set. Jockey made a key decision to kick going towards the last 2F as he saw the frantic leader starting to flag. This allowed LR to go to a clear lead and then display her ability to keep at it in the last furlong. Starting to stall late on and MT closing up to her but jockey timed his effort right. Hold her up and/or not make that kick and it would have been an ugly win, at best. STT off a low OR and physically better than that. But has not been able to put a full race together because of some mix of free running and hanging in his first three runs. 4TO in a Nursery he was held up and appeared to pack it in laer in the race. Perhaps the reason for the first-time blinkers and the foring ride here. Good sign that he had the pace to drag the rest of the field along at an uncomfortable pace and reasonable effort to still be second going into the last 1f. Inevitably fade given Spencer pressed him too hard. This not a full race put together competently either. Remains a work in progress but on a workable OR at 67 in physical terms. Good run by Mappin Time to travel best of those in rear group and able to produce a real forawrd effort 2F out and still closing on winner to the line. |
