Heavy rain at times in previous 3 days after a long dry spell. Stalls centre but split field for first half of race. KF, CB & RC cross over to stands' rail early and run in indian file along the rail. Other four race centre track for 2f then gradually work over towards Stands-Centre strip by halfway. Worth noting the pair that were in the photo finish for the win, 8 lengths clear of the 3rd, were running the rail. This is often a preferred place to run and can make a big difference. Consider the Planet Waves race here earlier in the season with several, solid, later winners collapsing early racing mid-track while Planet Waves sailed to a win up the stands' rail. How the rail was riding compared to centre track also matters when comparing this result to the preceding Maiden race. That produced a taking 9L winner who ran a very similar time to this race. Rationalising how impressive the Maiden winner looked with running a similar time to Nursery runners rating in the OR70s is tricky. If he was running a similar time on slower ground and doing it alone while the pair here were duelling that assists the thinking. It also helps to understand why the horses behind in the maiden race faded quite so badly, and early, as a group. While they were lesser types in review than that winner a number were better than, or equivalent with, this field (leaving out KF who is very bulky and an obvious Prescott 'improver' starting off on an OR lower than his full ability). If you factor in the rail being a good deal faster than centre track and the comparison of the two races becomes more tractable. |
