SUMMARY
Stalls stands' side but rail out by 10 yards so out towards centre-stands strip. Time of 62.33 compares to 62.07 that Radiohead ran in winning the Norfolk Stakes on GF. Ascot going reports somewhat contrary and watering at the Royal Ascot meeting. Radiohead beat a moderate field for the Norfolk and turned sideways but times still not easily reconciles. Consider that Red Jazz won this race in 2009 in 61.32 of GFG and had won a similar Windsor maiden to Zebedee. RJ had a tough field to beat and got dragged to the time by Mick Channon's Archers Road (already a dual winner). Channon's maiden Saucy Buck who failed on firmer going last time seemed to set just an average pace here.
Race typically attracts set of early winners the best of whom go on to compete up to Listed level. Last three editions have produced 2 x later Listed winners (for Hannon & Meehan) as the best efforts. Many of field prove precocious and lack development potential.
With Hannon having won so many of the 2yo races in 2010, David Evans rarely using the race, Mick Channon not having had a winner yet & trainers such as Kevin Ryan & Fahey not represented a substandard feld this year overall. Pick A Little the only other winner apart from Zebedee and PAL's win in a weak race against even weaker opponents. Small & limited and blown away here.
Hannon had said on debut that Zebedee was his fastest early 2yo. FTO the jockey waited until into the last furlong to make an effort with the stalling Scarlet Rocks not able to give a lead to Z. who travelled comfortably. Zebedee not pick up immediately at Windsor but then finished strongly.
Similar here with Jockey Hughes seeming to know he could beat this field easily whatever. So, he took the opportunity to teach the horse to settle. Held back to second rank immediately and then held back again after 1F to last as the horse was slightly free as if to make his point to the horse. Perhaps getting run away with by Canford Cliffs here in 2009 was playing on his mind.
Zebedee again travelling easily behind the leading horses, as at Windsor, to the last furlong and waiting for his orders. Swicthed to rail into the final furlong and asked for his effort. Again, the response was not immediate quickening but progressed to lead. But, then the strong finish kicked in again and pulled away and unpressed. Could have extended the margin with earlier effort or asked for more effort.
Hannon jnr. said after the race that he would be targeted at Royal Ascot (presumably the Norfolk) although he might run at Sandown before that (presumably the National Stakes at the end of May). Jockey Hughes' confidence here seems the biggest clue to this being a 'Real Thing' type. Jockey has good ability to pick out the high class ones.
Placed horses seem below the normal standard here. Some interest in Reposer as the biggest in the field and a little green at times. A little slow to start as he wrestled clear of the blanket he wore in the stalls. Not know what to do 2F out when asked for effort. Some progress towards the last 1F and then faded late.
