SUMMARY
Field raced Centre track.
Picture - of the finish.
Pretty orderly race run at an average pace (or a little under) with the pace increasing inside 2.5f out and then the typical 2F out efforts. This put the weaker ones under enough pressure to put some distance on them. First 8 to halfway way within just over 2.5L of the lead and the 5th at barely more than a length. Gap back to Menadati at 5L at then the 3 weaker & green ones already in the last 3 places and struggling.
But, a 2F+ sprint by 7f+ staying types not really show any of the 1st 5 in a strong light and all just plugging on to the finish without showing any real forward spurt or anything different. To make the point the first two home were drawn next to each other, broke similarly well and ran the entire race side-by-side with never more than a neck between them. Firmer ground probably not helping some strtch out and a bit of rolling around by the green & weaker ones.
SF fit and good condition and an ok size. But narrower bodied and a galloper. Typical Johnston grinder who is never going to excite with speed. Only the third 2yo winner of season for him (3yo+ horses going well) and this probably the start of an improvement. Too slow for a fast run 6f on debut and not able to make any ground LTO in a 7f race run at a crawl that turned into a sprint. But this the second winner from the race (and the winner & 4th ran well in strong placed runs 2 days later). Unable to overhaul DanzigsG at Warwick and took 1F+ to wear her down here. She eventually stalled and faded and not seeing out the fully 7f at a faster pace. On review SF a low 70s galloper and will stay 8f.
DG small and lightly built and a late OR50s type in the fullness and helps to put her prvious level into context.
NTH ok size but a little compact with it and weaker in front. Late OR60s without some development. Took longer to get going than the winner 2F out and lost the neck he could never claw back int he sprint.
Menadati the best type in the field and ok for upper OR70s or a little better. Looked in good condtions if a little wound up. Disappointing he couldn't win but not helped by the race shape. As the halfway positions to final placings show making ground not easy. A slow start and a bit of being held up got him 5L back at halfway and proved too much to get back. Got 3.5L of it back by 2F out and then 1L to the line. Kept threatening to reel in the leaders but never quite able to raise the pace. Would support him against them in future in a race with a stiffer pace and a more even starting point to launch the efforts.
Talk Talk giving weight all round and on 3TO before he goes to nurseries. Shorter but heavily built and ought to be competitve off OR73-4ish. Race shape enable him to have a quiet 3TO run and presume he will get an OR a little below his usable level. Not fully wound up and appeals as a 4TO improver.
Hannon's SeptDraw another weaker looking filly and notably light behind. But for the stable you would be dismissng her for the future. Given a quiet time as the late race effort sproved a bit too much for her nous (and probably her pace). Bit like the Germans and the World Cup, writing off Hannon 2yos never feels quite as comfortable as with many stables. They really do know more than anyone about juvenile events and what you need to win something.
UAEStorm an ok size but did not look in good condition and his attitude was off. Going between lethargic and edgy at times. Outpaced just by the pace increase, never mind the 2f out efforts. Showed more pace on debut and on that form should have competed better here. Another low OR70s on review and see how whether he can improve next time. [Update - trainer lodged a WTRB report saying the horse was unsuited by the going.]
Back For Tea more likeable than the 100/1 suggests and in very good condition. Ought to be an OR60s winner if his trainer was in better form. Attended the pace ok but hanging as soon as the efforts were made. Better type than his form reads as.
Similar comments for another 100/1 straggler. Caledonia Prince usable at OR70 level but much too wound up. Seemed to have been washed down for sweating before he even got to the pre-parade area. Never settled in race and never balanced.
Laffraaj small and low OR60s and given a quiet time to prepare for Nurseries.
Al Raneen very mentally young and part stupid and part mouse.
