A typical Sandown Maiden over the distance in many ways. A average pace at most and with faster conditions racing prominently and advantage (showed in in many races at the meeting). Big field, wide stall spread, a short run to a tight bend, green horses and 'tomorrow' jockeys produce a drawn out field without any real pace pressure. 2nd & 5th home around 8L back of Star Surprise at halfway but without that horse having to do much. Giving him an 8L 'start'. But a 2F+ late race effort up a hill will slow the leaders up towards the finish to some extent so plenty of opportunity to produce 'Eyecatchers' making a bit of ground back but of variable 'worth' in quality terms. Winner competent and had advantages and presumably OR70s. Headed by Baransky in final push but that one stalled late on. Other prominent racers faded with Enlightening running too freely early and heavily eased (Hughes typical) when 4th towards the last 1f but fading. El Maachi longer priced Evans debut and 7f+ starters less ready than his sprinters. Probably lower quality. JCastle given a typically non-involving ride by Hills for most of the race. Going so well 2F out even he thought that perhaps 'Today' might be now. Blocked and not get a clear run until late on. 6th at 1F out and making real forward effort to get to 2nd and would have won with a clear run. Just medium size but promising at the level. Baransky appeared not to fully stay but off a less taxing pace. Comes from an important Newmarket maiden that often produces a raft of Open Maiden winners from the front finishers. But, this year's edition not look that strong and some more promising horses well behind that day. Even a narrow win here would not have been a strong effort. Bawaab as promising as JC overall. Would have been 3rd, at least, with a harder ride and moving comfortably for minimal asking into the last 1f. More promising than the final position. |
