Godolphin introduced Vale Of York (Breeders' Cup juvenile winner, Listed class in Britain) in this race in 2009 for a taking debut win from a strong field. This field less obviously strong and a more workmanlike success by Samurai sword. Second Godolphin debut 2yo winner of day split between their trainers. Dettori picked up spare ride on runner-up Diamond Penny and able to press the winner to the line. DPenny perform better here for more even pace and a less tight bend (which had made him look slower & a tad cumbersome at Warwick (but in a race which is 'working out' well despite the slower pace and lower ratings on the day)). Mixed pace race with MF & MMJ leading early after ok breaks from inside draws. Neither puhing pace along and both then held back after 1.5f. Ajtebi on Samurai Sword took decision to take lead and up the pace after 3F. Wound pace and effort at 2f out. Increase of pace put a number of horses under pressure. Most notably Cotton Spirit (on return from being withdrawn after upset at the stalls) who got outpaced then started hanging and has form at a lower level. Diamond Penny looked a real stayer and taking time to develop because of his size. Not a speedy type but a development galloper. KOTC a solid run but put in his place by bigger types a good reflection of what he is capable of. Early Applause has run in races which would suggest the trainer thinks he has ability. He has stepped up 1f in each run. He looked unready in condition on his first run and very gormless and still stupid last time. More of the same here and a comedy slow start as he goofed around. Responded to being niggled to get going by steaming off and running too freely into the back of other horses for a furlong. Still managed a later race effort. Presumably better than he has shown and might put up a blossoming performance if he ever wises up. Swift Alhaarth similar to Dimaond Penny and looks an 8f galloper but with the size and scope to develop at that level. Typically for a Johnston stayer he looked quite good when able to make ground at his own pace to halfway. Green and unbalanced when asked to make an instant effort 2F out and losing ground. But not fading and ok for future. Muzdahi on STO after a debut in one of those slowly run Newmarket maidens which can be hard to read at best and plain misleading at times. Finished close to horses who have run well since and the 'franking' implication is that he must be as good. But a slower pace that day and he migth have finished with horses who were better than him because of that. Projecting the better later runs of the others onto him will send you the wrong way. Medium sized at best and notably smaller than the bigger lads here. Did not seem any obvious excuse and beaten by better horses. More than a hint of him getting intimidated as Diamond Penny went by him. |
