Slower time and OR67 3yo ran 74.65s later carrying 7lbs less (plus a 5lbs Apprentice). Some form of OR70s effort by winner here and large gaps back to the rest needs a bit of pondering. Trainer Johnston interviewed before the race and confirmed the view that his 2yos are showing better signs now after being slow to 'come to hand'. Malthouse typical sort that the trainer buys and bigger and looks like a 3yo already and mature attitude with it. Also has a Group winner close up in his pedigree and just what the trainer looks for (presumably since he understands genetics at the mechanical level and not just Pedigrees in an airy-fairy 'fashion' sense, '3/4 brothers in blood' and the like). Clive Cox seems selective over which 2yos he runs at Ascot. He only really runs two types with one being proven winners being tried in better races. The 4 x FTO runners he has run at the course since 2003 have produced two wins (SPs 12/1 & 15/2, on in this race) and two unplaced (SPs 25/1 & 40/1 for solid development winners). Apollo D'Negro shorter SP now the Market takes him more seriously and on the template ought to be OK and a defeat a little disappointing although he probably bumped into one with the winner and Escholido has also been talked up by his trainer. At the other end of the scale Juarla the fourth 2yo of the season for Ron Harris to get to the start for it's intended debut and not take part in the race. Ron could manage a long, weary, explanation of how the world is causing all the problems and not his horses. If you could be bothered to listen. Stalls centre & field raced Centre to stands. Formation flying through halfway with Gekko in a 1.5L lead ahead of 5 in a line, within half a length of each other making the wing behind the leader. PP alone in last behind the wing and 3L off the lead. Another Ascot race which seems to fall apart in the last 2F and big distances back to solid seeming horses by the finish despite a less than taxing pace and ordinary time. Many races here just 'look' different in the way they play out than at a typical track. Wider disparity in abilities, difficult surface to handle, or some combination of factors. |
