SUMMARY
Rail well out at 12 yards from normal position at 6F start down to 7yds out at the finishing post. 27mm of water applied to the course from last Thursday to morning of the meeting.
Another unsatisfactory race featuring a moderate pace and 'Tender Handling' in abundance (or jockeys trying to conceal their horse's ability to get away from euphamisms). Useful to take the runs of Putin & City Legend as good markers to judge what the rest were up. This pair at long SPs but had the advantage because of the way the race was allowed to develop. They were drawn next to the rail and formed up into the leading pair there with minimal effort. The pace set was moderate and the race turned into a 2F sprint with the others having to haul themselves past these two who were running the shortest distance and getting a jump on the others.
Worth thinking about what sort of quality Putin & CL are. On Profile they are OR50-60s kit and probably in the OR58-63 range. They ran a slow time so did not have to run to their best range to make the placed horses here.
Putin is an interesting story and one which demonstrates how much of 2yo racing is working through the same patterns each year, with minor, directionless, changes. The fourth foal for an owner breeder and the previous three have all have all won for this trainer with the best of them (Westwood) being able to win at 2yo. Go back to 2007 and Westwood appears to have run in equivalent 6f maidens that Putin has. Finishing 13th of 14 at 66/1 on debut (Putin was 12th of 15 at 80/1) and then 2nd (at 66/1) in the same maiden as this after getting an easy lead. Westwood was an OR70+ horse with development but placed in a tougher edition than this one and Putin seems unlikely to be the same. But, clearly the Market and lost debuts are not good indicators of what sort of ability horses from this yard have so perhaps Putin is better than the OR63 level. The trainer has already landed a minor gamble 4TO in a Nursery this year after setting a horse with known ability up to get a sub-OR60 level. No chance of that with Putin now but an indication that 50/1 here more a sign that the Market knows nothing about the stable rather than the horse's known quality level.
Similar comments about City Legend with McCabe runners usually starting at longer SPs. But he gets comeptent debuts and odd places at longer SPs. But this one still presumably OR60s somewhere.
So, a less than strong pair to get yourself past if you are a real OR70+ type. Majestic Dream one of only two horses ridden like the jockey actually wanted to get past and try to win. Made a lot on debut through strangled horses after a slow break and using a Blanket at the stalls. Another slower break here but the moderate pace meant easy to drop in. The jockey took the precaution of stoking her up just after halfway and a bit of rolling around before she got organised. This meant he was able to recover a couple of the 3L he was back at hlafway before the 2F efforts. Better forwrd effort than the leading pair and leading soon after 1.5f out. Hanging and green after but won a little comfortably. Lots of quirks and niggles and winning a weaker race so not one to follow as such. But scope to improve if the issues are ironed out.

Tijori the only other horse ridden to try to win. Hannon first string and Basti owned 2yos are usually trying to win FTO if they are good enough. Green at times and not look comfortable racing in a pocket in the packing field to halfway. Perhaps to green to pick up 2F out and given a fullish ride by Hughes as opposed to his 'Rocking Horse' educational bit. The sort of green debut that Hannon 2yos can recover from but didn't travel through a moderate race like a good one. The Market may well be instructive next time.
Empress Charlotte on 3TO before nurseries and travelling well enough to 2F out. Jockey seemed to use the horse getting mildly blocked as an excuse to pack it in very early and jog home. Usuable type in the OR65-71 range although has not looked thatt enthusiastic about being a racehorse. But a 4TO improver profile for nurseries.
BAlexander the Hannon second string but some support. Too green to get involved.
Last three home all 'Tenderly Handled' to some extent with Silver Angel the most notable. eased very early.
