Does the Lingfield straight have an advantage to horses running Centre Track or not? A very complicated question to unpick and many races suggest there is. But, you can suggest other reasons for the shape of finishes at the course. For example, many races at lots of courses show the closers finishing away from the rail because the pacemakers run the rail. As the pacemakers fade the closers come past them toward centre track because that is where the clear path is. Lingfield is a course where jockeys have learnt that trying to find a gap towards the rail is problematic so they challenge wide. This then looks like a centre course bias when you are just watching the best of the finishers out there in most races. But, you get plenty of examples where horses who get to Centre Track seem able to make up more ground than you would expect. Phoebs made 4L+ in the straight here in just an average race time for the time of year. That is not normal distance to make up and either she is much better than the others or getting onto the centre strip is worth a couple of lengths often. You can wonder at times whether the base of the track (under the Polytrack loose surface that gets harrowed) is actually a 'Crown' to assist drainage so the centre track strip is closer to the solid base. |
