SUMMARY
Odd stuff. There must be some sort of system that works with backing second strings. The Market over-reacts to a hint of not First Choice and the prices ond the other one are often too long. Godolphin, Hannon & Hamdan seconds seem often to be more competitive that the SPs suggest. Other owners like Middleham Park often choose to stick the Second Colours on the good one presumably because they know it will mean a few points on the price available.
Thinking clearly, this is a poor race and Mutual Force is by a good sire out of a high class dam. He cost 150,000 guineas back in April which means at least 1 other group of people wanting to pay 6 figures for him. No matter how disappointing, or slow to come to hand, he has been he can still expect to place in this. How does he end up joint 5th favourite in double figures? Ok, he has a 7lbs apprentice on but this seems to be a claimer who gets trusted with usable ones. Not a claimer only allowed on ones that cannot go fast enough to dislodge a 'Wobbly'. Ok, he is drawn wide but this isn't a tight handicap and this bunch are going to be spread all over the Westwood as lack of talent becomes apparent.
After a tardy break and being hauled back hen crossing to the rail he ends up last & the 12/1 perhaps looks short. But then more weirdness. The shunning of the Far Rail in the straight at Beverley seems to have got out of hand. The field in the 5f juvenile raced up the centre and the runner-up finished on the stands' rail. Here the field spread out across the track early with nothing on the rail. Which meant that as the bigger Mutual Force closed up to the tiring rabbits, comfortably despite some head-up reeness, he had a clear run up the rail and the shortest distance home.
Meanwhile, LAArab was getting baulked in the traffic jam in centre track and then fading. Faded tamely after being blocked though.
Moderate form. Halfway positions versus final placings suggest the first four through halfway had gone too hard early. They were the four who had pressed on downhill early on to be prominent. LAA pressed forward after a slow break to use his good draw. LR limited and driven along to force to the lead past LAA. GP forcing along too hard from a wide draw to join the leader after 2f. GAgain another forced to go forward from a slow break. Appeared to be travelling ok to 2F out but faded tamely.
JP an example of the Middleham Park 2nd string on debut that beat the 1st string (who raced too freely). Long SP again here but appeared no fluke and a solid size and responding to the line. On one hand she got the best path through the race - sitting in 6th on the rail and settled. But, she had the pace and nous to do it so a positive overall.
Adlington not finish race off fully and had run too freely on the downhill section and fighting his jockey for a long way. Solid effort to get to the lead.
KB ran better than final result. Making a forward effort in centre track that got him to 4th.
DGlory small and just plugging on slowly too late again.
BMS given a very quiet time by the jockey. But a 3TO runner for a trainer with no record with 2yos and no worthwhile form before and this a poor effort. Not exactly a Hannon 'strangler'.
