Fast conditions on the day. Stiff pace but difficult for closers to come from a long way back with the second rank to early midfield not softened up enough to fade late. Closer candidates limited anyway given the general standard, slow starts, the hearty contest in the back straight to try to get a positions, hampering at various points and the midfield+ horses generally running wide on the bend. Two Tim Easterby horses both given forcing rides from different draws and ran too hard to get to the front. Capped that by then hooking up and forcing each other to race too freely. Both eventually faded notably. Another example of the shorter SP for the owner/trainer in the 2nd colours. Alhoni favourite again and gave us what he always does. Showing enough to draw people in but never threatening to win. Slow start and hampered in the back straight to drop to 12th. Able to make that an advantage by dropping to the rail and making ground on the open rail into the bend as the contesting ruck rolled wide. Took time to get going in the straight and then trundled on to the line at a pace he deemed sufficient with his head held a bit upright. Never stopping but never getting involved. Look at his last four races and his halfway positions to final placings read 7->3, 8->2, 8->2, 6->3 and in this race 7->3rd. Hmm, any pattern there? Obvious 'Eyecatcher' in the sole newcomer El Torbellino with most of the rest of the field lacking development potential. Lost ground in the back straight and got back from 12th to 4th late. More than a niggle about the quality of the effort and staying on into tiring horses perhaps. The tenderly ridden JA & DS both got back to midfield without being asked to do anything .The latter having reared out of the stalls and lost enough grond to be adrift early. The jockey looked a bit surprised to find himself getting into the ruck late on. |
