Stiff early pace with winner and MRidge tanking along too freely representing the same trainer & owner. Pace settled towrds 2f as these two drift over to stands' rail dragging the rest of the field with them. First 9 through halfway within 6L of the lead with next 2 at 7L+ and AV a little adrift. Important to note that two of the last three already driven and under pressure with SAge going ok on the rail. Stiffer pace meant that those working hard to keep their position would fade later. DV has OR in the mid-60s and not competed well off that. Trainer has said he thinks he has not been trying. Physically an OR70+ sprinter and better type in context of this race. Able to survive the pace and produce a finish in this grade. Can be competitive in Nurseries off his mark if he performs to expectations. MRidge made his debut in a seller and another to look better than that level on Review. Too fizzy there and ran poorly. Trainer Harris said here he did not know what the problem was with the horse because he could work with horses better than selling class at home. More of the same attitude wise on the day. Too fizzy overall and tore off int he lead in a battle with the jockey. Another that needs mentally 'fixing' and something the trainer seems to struggle with. CR probably found the pace too much and trundled through the faders to a never threatening third. Small TBM dropped to correct grade on return from a break. Second best persister off the pace and competitive in lesser sellers. Might be better back at 5f. SAge probably an example of a subtle reason why you should be careful using 7lbs claimer. If you were Stan Moore and looking to win a seller STO with a horse then running it as a Second String with a 7lbs jockey on it's debut might be a tactic. Finish well back and, as regular readers will realise, Second String with apprentice will mean opening 33/1 STO even in a waek race. But, in a race like this which falls apart later on a held up horse can find itself closing towards the places without doing anything. The places are coming back to them. The youngster here appeared not to know what to do in that position so did nothing which did not look too clever. Set-up for STO , or not? Typically, the stewards did nothing in asking about the instructions to the jockey. If the horse had mildly moved left and breathed on another the jockey would have been in real trouble. |
