SUMMARY
12mm of rain since Saturday 2,000 Guineas Card. Stalls Stands' Side and 1,000 Guineas suggest a Stands' Rail bias.
Yarooh given forcing ride to get across form wide draw to lead on rail. Ridden by Chris Catlin who seemed to have turned into a one-dimensional pace forcer on the AW over the winter. Rode bigger percentage of front-runners and pressers than anyone. With the 'Fashion' after New Year on the AW to set dawdling paces thank good for Catlin being one of the few to try something different. But, can ovedo it and seemed to go a little hard here. Yarooh comfortably put in her place by better types and continue the theme of the Newmarket fillies race in April being just average form for that race.
Oracle forced along to join Yarooh early one off the rail. Got to lead comfortably befre the last furlong. Hung right a little inside then responded as Temple Meads went by. Ok effort but fit with idea of him as British Listed level sprinter type rather than high class (or Group 3 in Ireland, Group 2 in Germany and Group 1 in Italy, ho, ho).
Temple Meads an unusual debut for Ed McMahon & owner John Fretwell. Only three previous debuts at Newmarket or Newbury in recent years have produced a 25/1 win for a Group class colt, 10/1 2nd for a filiiy tried in Group races at 3yo and 14/1 5th of 18/1 for STO winner. Temple Meads strongly supported and suggested connections confident. Likeable, bulky sprinter. Show good ability to go progress and go past Oracle and strong finish. Serious prospect as 5-6f sprinter for Group level.
Godolphin normally start 2yos over 5f early (for them) of good maiden winner level through to Listed placer evel. Pedigree suggest Al Aasifh similar. Ran solid race to make progress in line with this template.
OWOL run similar race behind Yarooh as she sould have done on debut if not hampered late on. Suggest that pair of fillies run to form and set standard the others worked against.
Numeral a slow start and jockey Hughes accepted this was going to be an educatonal run from early on (as he often used to before this season and the different debut readiness for the Hannon 2yos). Took time to get going and sire HREmporer not really produced early 5f 2yos in Britain yet. Staying on ok late but running into a closing gap so Hughes sit up and wait for next time. Better than showed and presume will be at 6f next.
Sheer Courage a standard Hannon debut in these sort of better maidens and presume the noraml OR76-84 kit ans starts here as second string (similar at Ascot).
