Field raced centre track. Usable pace with 1st 9 though halfway within 4L of the lead. Other pair a little adrift. Malgoof able to show what he can do fully after running too freely on debut and having to work hard from a wide draw STO to get to a prominent position. Ran a little freely early but biggest and best type in field. Able to wind pace after halfway and only CS able to off any challenge .Responding pretty strongly to that and finished the race off. CS another indication that the Quinlan yard is better overall form after three below average years. Back with FTO winners in 2010 and this a typical strong Newcastle effort. Support in the morning and ridden to try to win the race. Solid effort to put some pressure on the leader to the last 1F with clear space back to the 3rd. Beaten by a better horse and solid promise. Gap back to the others and perhaps the Changeover Point unless Inside is ok. A little green overall and not hard pressed to get to clear 3rd until a later stall & fade. Looking at the halfway positions to final placings a good question is why did the two shorter SP types fade from 3rd & 4th at halfway to finish well back? Purkab just look lightweight and moderate and blown away by better horses. Debut effort behind useful horses seems over-rated. Piccoluck probably a mix of reasons. His debut 2nd place was achieved by running in second rank on the favoured Stands' rail at this course at the meeting where that was a laughably strong advantage. Debut effort just misleading probably and the two later efforts show what he can so. Has run freely in last two runs and too free here in behind the leader. But, produced an effort inside the last 2f which seemed what he was capable of as a limit. Faded soon inside the last 1f. CChar some support in a period where the Dascombe 2yos are showing more life and consistency after a moderate season. Looked too slow (perhaps too green) to go with the 2f out efforts and niggled along earlier in the race. Plugging on again in the last 1F (not 'Eyecatching' but plugging on past horses going backwards). Seems like he would need further or a slower 6f. |
