Somewhat messy race and the result a little puzzling. Two horses at shorter odds and the other four all rags. The pair of favourites had suspect form and were short prices on connections to a large extent. So, already a set-up where the fovourites might not even need to underperform much to get an odd result. Race developed in peculiar manner to add to the likelihood. GGF going but race run in a heavy rain shower and kicking up divots although that was probably just kicking the top off a firmer base. Slower time and pace slow. 3 break ok but all held and racing off rail. TMF missed the break on the rail and 2 lengths back. But, with nothing going forward was able to trundle through an open gap on the rail to pick the lead up and set his own pace. From there he had the run of the race. Able to make a solid effort 2f out and a clear win. But 20/1 after a lost debut and if you forget about the favourites he was beating up on LAC, RS & DFL with the advantage of a soft lead. Which would mean an positive for a an ok effort in the straight but with the caveat that he was not beatin gmuch and in a slow time. Circumstantials suggest Fahey stable not rate him that highly unless he has been a slow learner as the botched start would point to. In the 'Pending' tray. Worth forgetting about the favourites in judging the winner because they present a false background to what he was beating. Lamasaas came here using the excuse of a slow break and greenness for moderate first run but talked up a bit. Another slow break here but recoved with no problem to the joggers up front. Then pulled a little hard and raced wide. Making his effort 3-4 wide on the turn to the straight and carried wider by KK hanging. That lost him 2-3L to the leader's kick. But, a less than exciting response when he was clear. Minor forward effort and hanging left and took him a long time to overhaul the small terrier LAC. Eased once got to 2nd with the winner gone but not looking like one to trust or follow. KK outpaced over 6f the previous week in a slow race and suspect form. Raced wide here and outpaced again in the late race sprint and hanging right to compound it. 7f+ and a bit of time to develop. He is owned by the 2yo Handicapper for Timeform who was interviewed before the race. A somewhat intense individual and lacking a bit of self-awareness. He had been at Leicester the previous week engaging jockey Makin in earnest conversation (a bit too earnest for the jockey by the look on his face). The last uttering from Mr Timeform being '..should be good for a 7f maiden..'. Here he is soon after over 6f and why? Perhaps Pontefract is close to Halifax. Anyway the owner finished his pre-race interview saying he hoped to stick a high handicap mark on his horse after the race. Self-awareness lack disallows saying 'No' to hubris. Unpick that. So, that's what happens if you spend a lot of time working on 2yo races, is it? Hmmm. |
