SUMMARY
Very fast Conditions on day with a wet track and a stiff, cold, Tailwind. Fastest time run by a 2yo in 2009 was 59.26s by R Woody in December and that faster than any since the start of 2004. Next fastest was Stevie Gee in 59.36s in 2006 who proved up to Listed Class. Second Division of Maiden produced a 2yo Course Record. For comparison the Older filly La Capriosa (off OR58) ran 57.69s on the day carrying 1lb less.
Trainer Fahey interviewed before racing said his two runners in the Divisions where both faster types than Brocklesby winner Chiswick Bey. He said he had run that one on soft turf at Doncaster because he knew it would stay 5f in the conditions and that one might not run for a while. He also said that the second Division runner Arctic Feeling was faster than Jamesway, less laid-back and probably the more natural runner. Jockey Hanagan named Arctic Feeling as his best ride and the confidence was apparent.
Both Fahey runners by the sire Camacho with Jamesway a full brother to early 2009 juvenile winner Star Rover. Jamesway a taller, more lightly built, type than his brother. Arctic Feeling more neatly made and more solidly built.
Jamesway led early and field under pressure before halfway. Made effort 2F out and pulled clear comfortably chased by Mappin Time. Won in slower time than Arctic Feeling but not fully extended and not challenged during race as that one was. OR80+.
Mappin Time a good debut by trainer standards and definite OR75. Medium sized but neatly made and balanced mover. Lost ground at the start but willing attitude to make positions to second quickly and keep on to the line.
Big break to 3rd and the Garbage Gap for the race with small, limited filly Callipygos next and low OR50s at best. Trading 4th and all the trainer's runners ran respectable races in the two Divisions. Low OR60s at best and not one to follow. Merjaan another Clive Brittain runner that was fizzy and inexperienced on the day. Lightly built behind and perhaps a late OR60s type but another of moderate interest only.
Bobby Smith a good size and well prepared for day, mostly fit and the most forward coat. Not neatly made being angular and a little narrow. Not obvious 5f and seemed to find race too quick. Ought to be usable early on size to around OR69-70. Took trainer's FTO record to 1 from 62 since 2006 when he previously was proftiable to follow with FTO runners.
A couple of interesting fillies as OR60s sprinters who should show themselves to be better than this result in Roodee Queen & Be A Good Lady. The first of those a compact and deep-bodied type but not fit enough to last a full race out. Missed the break and made a real effort after 1F to progress from 10th to join the second-rank line. That was her done for the race and she tired to the last 1f but can progress physically. Be A Good Lady a less confident improver but can probably get into the low OR60s. Lost a lot of Ground at the start and at least 20 lenths adrift of the pack at Halfway. Showed some ability, obviously at a low level but slightly unsual, to get onto the back of the faders 1F out and plug on past a few to 6th. Has enough build to think she might be usable at a low level.
