SUMMARY
Strong pace with STTimee tearing off in front and and 3L clear after 2f. his put field under pressure and spread ovek 16L back to the last pair. Riverdale at 8L back on Far Rail at halfway and hampered to some degree getting a run later in race & switched out late to centre track.. Field spread out from Far Rail to Centre track from early on and tight field running the Far Rail seem out of favour at track.
But, this race seem to suggest a real Far Side advantage. Halfway positions to final placings not really consistent with a strong pace so either that call is wrong or something more subtle is going on. Since Pace refers to STT perhaps the others were far enough back from him to be running usable pace? Perhaps he hung on for 5th because he is actually better than than field (other than perhaps the winner) and if he ever settles won and puts a full race together competently he is going to Iron Out a field in a Northern Auction race. But, there are two 'Closers' in the first eight home and they both came from higher draws including a suspect looking effort from the 100/1 shot in 5th. Look at the first 6 home and there were all within 2 lanes of the Far Rail at halfway. Anything that raced wider than 5-6 lanes off the rail made no progress. This included some shorter SPs such as favourite RGAG (Lane 10 off rail) and Saltergate (Lane 13). Overall pace was strong enough to fold those racing prominently on far side back to those racing directly behind them on the far side. Wider runners never got into it. Watch the Replay again and see how far RGAG is away from the rail in stall 1 and further down the hill and the fact of him as favourite seems silly. Someone transported in from 2008 who had not seen any intervening Beverley 5f races would think RGAG must be a Group sprinter in the making given his draw to be that short.
