SUMMARY
Another Epsom race where the initial feeling afterwards is an event that 'fell apart' to some extent and needs some 'explaining'. Not ideal because the difference between 'explanations' and 'excuses' (valid or not) is tricky to define. But, a race where so many heads were being held way up high it could have been for Camels.
Point 1 is probably that the pace was too strong. This is an extended mile and the pace was better than we have had in a lot of the 7f races of late. SAlhaarth a typically agressive run by a Johnston horses. Hustled along from the widest draw to get to the lead then press on and no settling back once in front. Field spread over 14L at halfway and the winner more than 5L back. This pace was then compounded by Zakon being nudged up to join the leader fully 3f out and the final race efforts kicked off for them. Which did for the leading pair pretty early and a moderate effort by SA before fading. Much better from Zakon to hang on longer and finish amongst the second rank of Closers but a poor rating.
Two of the shorter SPs relative tearaways that faded then. Book Keeper mulish before the race had started. Sweaty and fractious. Did not like being hauled back early and Head Up and no response when asked for an effort later. All fitting together as a horse who was not going to do it today and need to see him in a better mood to support him. Another negative in the Zarooni 'Career Development' ledger. OKetchup hauled back from the start by Munro and never put in the race. SoS & PH pulled & hustled to race too close to the pace and fading with PH either packing it in or not staying the extra distance as a tiddler.
6 of the 10 dealt with and a lot of the reason the for feeling of a 'Broken' race. But, Suzy Wong a better winner than just falling into 'Empty' race. Got to midfield comfortably and a strongish finish despite looking green. Handled the course and reliable attitude and stayed 8.6f FTO. When a trainer who does not get 2yo FTO winners (and has a ropey record overall) gets one a good bet is that the horse is a natural and OR80+.
Trainer Balding had first 2yo winner of season on the day and cited TTW as another Green Shoot in interview. He has become very selective with his runners at the course having had 2 winners from 13 runners 2003-6. After a break his 6 runners in 2009 produced 2 winners and 3 places. This run meant the last 7 runners have all made the first 4. The type the trainer buys are typically medium sized and balanced types, neatly made. Possible this links to being able to choose types which will handle this track.
