SUMMARY
Field raced on the stands' rail with three crossing over early and Janood staying wide for 3f before coming across. SS & Zaidan together in lead with both held by their jockeys and fighting against it to some extent in early race. Other pair racing more settled.
Dettori reported to have said (via Crisford) the first two (Zaidan attended by Slim Shadey) went hard and set the race up. Overall time not strong and SShadey managed to see race out ok. Seems more likely to have been an ordinary pace and Zaidan ran below form. Never going smoothly and niggled early. May not have handled ground but a couple of other things to consider. Two wins have come from being held up well off the pace in stronger pace races. Has looked good in making smooth progress through. Different race shape here.
Other point to note is the Clive Brittain record. Not a good trainer overall and various niggles about his style. In recent years one niggle has been the way the stable form has tailed off after mid-season. In 2007 a later start to year and a single win after mid-August. Only two wins of any sort in 2008 and both in August. A fuller season last year, with more 2yos as this year, and a burst of May-July wins and then tailing off to odd winners through the rest of the season. This year similar. A good May as his best horses won on ability but a single win (in an Auction race) since June 25th. [Would make someone wonder. All that time spent backing Radetsky onto the gallops in the dark....Chicken or Egg?]
