SUMMARY
IRiver running freely in FT blinkers but held by jockey so setting an average pace but in a battle with the pilot. Field only spread over 2.5L back from the lead at halfway with others mostly going along settled (winner professional). VDust some bouts of pulling. Plugging on in the sright on the Far Rail in an unexciting manner when cut-up by the fading IR hanging to the rail. Last 2-3L switching out and some response.
MDrm a poor favourite and seemed to be based on the 'Hope' that a Swinburn maiden winner must have 'more to come' in a Nursery. But OR80 is a horrible over-rating of what he achieved in his maiden win. In both previous runs he has got behind and then plugged on. Plenty of 'Niggles'. Slower start again with his 'Blanket' (the easiest way to lose any horse 1-2L at the start is to stick a blanket on them) but able to recover ok to an average pace. Ran Lane 2 around the bend and a minor negative. But, placed ok for the efforts inside 2f and just looked too slow to deal with a couple of nippy fillies in this race set-up.
Another solid effort by Hortensia held up but just averagely competitive off current OR and likely to need it to go down. Jockey Catlin switched onto her after Barista a NR (tactical so that he could run at York the next day) suggesting she was second string originally.
Trainer Osborne has good record of getting Nursery wins with previous winners over the years. This win meant he has had three 2yo winners this season (all with 'Fifth' prefixes) and 6 wins with two Nursery wins. Takes his 'Wins Per Winner' to 2.0 and an area where he has always done well having finished ranked in the Top 10 trainers by that measure 3 times in recent years. In his best year in 2003 he managed 2.2 WpW with 14 winners & 31 wins (note that 'Winner' should always mean a horse who has won a race, a non-Maiden, while 'Win' should mean a success in a single race. Using 'Winner' to mean a single race win is confusing overall and hides a range of useful information about how a trainer, or sire, is getting the successes).
