SUMMARY
Winner's stable sponsored the race.
Race often the highlight of the season for the winner and struggle in higher grades and many of field usually precocious and lack the development to be even Maiden winner class. 2009 race a good example of how the best types normally get to the front but struggle to put distance into the lesser types. 1st two last year managed to win a Listed race & a Conditions event later and better than the usual return. Fillies in 3rd & 4th managed to win a Nursery off OR72 (currently has an OR below that) and the other is still a maiden. Fillies in 5th & 6th produce similar efforts later with the 6th struggling to win off OR60s as a 3yo on the AW. Better quality horses that finish further back than 1st/2nd probably need an excuse for being there.
Looking at this result you would say it fits that model. JG able to get to front, run rail and control the pace so had advantages. But, he made those through ability and clearly the best horse. Made a second effort to the last 1F and this gained another 2-3L and showing something a bit different. Trainer interviewed before race said his 2yos were not where he wanted them to be (in readiness, health & condition) and was just running those that seemed well. He said he knew JG was a better one and had not shown it yet on the course. But, given the stable illness issues he could not be sure he would show it today. Trainer a good judge of horse's ability from home work so take this sort of indicator seriously with him. JG effectively showed today that he is a better one and well enough now to finish the race off. Perhaps up to competing at Listed level win but suspect not better than that.
No excuse for BBear who was beaten by a bigger, better, horse he could never 'engage' with once he had let him cross in front of him to get the race. BB's lack of size showing as he was unable to match the winner's pace. Showed his positive attitude to fight for 2nd late on.
As with 2009 you are already into the Nursery types & worse unless there were excuses for being further back. Primo Lady gave trouble loading and a slow start. Responded ok to get to BB late but presume nursery type.
So Is She a debut for Alan Bailey who used to train near the course and regularly try to bring the best he had available to the course. Slow start but got back to group as JG settled the pace. Plug on ok in last 2f but not making strong forward move. Ok for OR7s perhaps but not looking better.
CIce of a little more interest and might be OR80+ if she can finish a race off fully. Faded on debut after attending a strong pace and then ran too freely in the lead LTO. Would not accept being dropped in 5th here and ran 2 wide for much of race and fighting for her head against the jockey on a couple of occasions. Had to switch out wide to get past outpaced Love Club toward the last 1.5F and a brief forward move before stalling. Can do better for a fast 5f and settling in front.
Love Club a small one for trainer and a sibling to the only 2yo winner the stable has prepared from day one (one with claimed runner). That sibling (Town House) a nippy type won over 5f as a 2yo and ended up with an inflated OR75. But, a small one and that a typical bit of BHA handicapper nonsense. Ran 30 more times up to 7yo with his OR going downwards regularly. Only other win as a 6yo off OR50. Love Club another small, but usable one who is probably OR50s in the fullness but will get rated above that as a 2yo bit of inflation. Showed enough zip here and hung on just long enough to think he can compete in a moderate Northern Auction race. Probably low OR60s (really, who knows what the BHA guy will pin on him) at 2yo and down after that.
LLibretto even smaller and her lack of size and basic pace demonstrated again. Had an excuse of racing 3-4 wide for a lot of the race but an OR50s type in real terms and has blagged a Novice race so 'job done' by trainer Evans.
