SUMMARY
Whole meeting has been run either in Centre Tack in the straight or on the Stands' Rail. Round Course races all race Centre Track and finishes often unwind on the Centre to Stands Side. First winner today on Round Course ended up on the Stands' Rail. Gimcrack Stakes ran down the Stands' Side and onto the Rail later on. Now, this caused talk of the Stands' Rail being a big advantage which the Pundits overplayed and winners could run wide of the rail. But, nothing has tried to run down the stands' rail other than one in the preceding Ebor Handicap who was well beaten.
Now, someone having a blast down the Far Rail on a long-shot drawn low would be a worthwhile gamble. But, two of the fancied runners drawn low here and ran down the far rail along with LL. Zippy filly Abzo blasted along on her own on the Centre to Far Side strip and 1L+ clear of everything after 1.5F (what must it be like going that quickly with so little underneath you and nothing in front of your face on this tiny filly...brave people). Anyway, along with the pace effect on the race more than a hint that the 'Far Rail' Project was a failure and meant those running that side underperformed. With the pace stiff on the Stands Side too the two held up to finish off best were closest to the stands' rail at the finish. Suspect this more a Pace unwinding effect than a faster strip. For example, BBear able to make a good effort on the Centre-Stands strip until stalling late on.
Initial reaction would be to treat the race as two separate 'Heats' and consider the Stands Side runners as a group. This produces a sensible summary with, for example, AF, BBear & BMoth all close to each other having been similarly placed when they have met in Novice races in early season. These 3 just beaten by a similar type in JG & beaten further by two progressive types on STO who had the race set-up for them to finish off best.
Trainer Quinn interviewed after the race and said New Planet had worked very well last week. He had said then that if the horse didn't go close in this race then the rest of his horses wer ein trouble.
