SUMMARY
5mm of rain from 4am & ground eased. Rail cutting up badly with larger fields in earlier races and this the 5th race of the day. Dress Up run Lane 2 (i.e. 2 horses inside her as Rail & Lane 1) and winners running that wide close to impossible on firmer going barring an all-out Pace War or a very superior ability horse. Time 3.08s slower than the Lily Agnes on the previous day to make the point about easier going and the hugging the rail run style not the advantage it was yesterday.
Dress up the 3rd winner already from the Windsor maiden race she ran in. The 5th has run a solid second to add to the wins. The only failure has been from the winner (The Sydney Arms) who was eased and last in a Conditions race at Salisbury. Trainer said she had 'Choked after the race' (i.e. physical response or problem and not mentally packing it in).
Upside down result in terms of running lanes wide of the rail. In 2009 nearly all of the 2yo races were won by a horse that raced on the rail. Consistent firmer going showing up the normal rail running bias. This race entirely different and you could split it into two events inside the overall race. The pace pressers were JFL (rail), MP (Lane 1), Dress Up (Lane 2) with DG just behind them in Lane 1. Three of these faded badly with the widest runner in DUp persisting best of these 4 and winning the race of the pressers from the widest run. She may well be the best horse but hard to believe she is so much better than DG although worth noing that Barry Hills' Swilly Ferry failed in the race in similar way in 2009. He blossomed in later season and the trainer has not had a 2yo winner yet.
Leave PR out of the view because he raced much too freely and wide so faded. The other five who were behind the pressers also saw the two widest runners fare best. Now, MM & Shafgaan clearly much better than the other three to explain their relative better closing to the 3 others in rear. But that pair closed much better from racing wide than we ever saw in 2009 on firmer going. Add to the story a slow time and a stiff pace which broke up the pressers and racing wide of the chewed up ground certainly not negative and perhaps even a positive. Two closers to place had advantage of missing pace and aided, to some degree, by wide racing when this is normally deadly to strong performances. They were closing up to fading horses in a slow overall time and moderate performance. Although the 1st 4 here in absolute ability terms are a bit better than this race often produces. The 2nd & 4th from 2009 are still maidens with the 2nd beaten in sellers at 2yo.
