Rain during day. Rail in on Far Side until 2f out cutaway. But fields raced centre to Stands' Side as is traditional on softer going (high side of the slope, partly tree covered and less chewed up). Hints of Stands Rail being an advantage in the 3 x 2yo races. Race meeting started with Clerk Of Course having going set at GSG. This was changed to Soft just before this race. Clerk said the change with input from the jockeys. As at Newbury the previous weekend the times are not Soft Ground ones and, again, the subjective evidence of the jockeys of how the ground is riding comes out softer than other methods would suggest. This Nursery race did not appear to have a strong pace and the winner got loose on the rail with an effort in later race. Time for race only 0.16s slower than the following Listed event for 2yos with only 1lbs difference in weights carried. Times for 8f at the track since 2003 range from 100.17s (1.8s faster then the next best) to 110.07s. The time for this race simply not possible on 'Soft' going. Suspect we have another example of a wet top layer than kicks up divots like Softer going but sitting on top of a firmer base which the horses are reaching and actually running on. Stop asking the Jockeys and use the Going Stick and the times? [The ludicrously fast time was when a 2yo Group 3 was transferred to the course when Ascot was closed for redevelopment. Concrete ground, good horses and a stiff pace produced the time. A good race which Dylan Thomas, yes that one, only managed to place in.] Typical stuff from trainer Cumani and Piceno's 3 race preparation for this Nursery debut has been painfully obvious. Working the system and not even making a nod towards covering it up. Three runs over 5-6f then up to 8f. Start sideways in a Flag start on debut then strangle the horse in the next two runs. Then turn it loose off an OR you know it can win off. Unedifying. |
