Towards the faster end of races for the distance but assisted by faster conditions and the rail in around the bend, which is rare. This race 0.73s faster than than the later Nursery (won by OR79 rater) with NK carrying 1lbs less than that winner. Not a strong performance in absolute ratings terms and a solid Listed level effort, in effect. Previous 7 races at the distance this year have produced 6 wins for the leader through halfway and the other having a Mark Johnston front-runner that expired early to allow the 2nd & 3rd through halfway to fight out the win. Looking at the halfway positions to final placings here might suggest a strong pace but that not the case. Explaining how the 6th through halfway beat the 4th helps to tease out the race quality. In most of those earlier races, as Maidens, the field split into competitive ones for the day early with a long tail of stupid and strangled ones. The pace here a little stiffer but not enough to produce a strong perfromance. Three of the field had been left behind by King Torus when finishing in a ruck in a Group 2 at Goodwood. None had looked real Group class then but made up half the field here. Stentorian has never looked Group quality and his placing in Ireland misleading. You suspect he is running in the higher quality races he has as one of the few winners the trainer has had rather than being the appropriate quality. In a poor season so far this was the the trainer's 25th runner in August for 2 wind and just 1 placer. The place in a 6 runner race. One win in an effective 2 runner newcomers' race at Hamilton and one Nursery win for a previous winner. Most of the others have finished 6th or worse and a lot have expired more fully than would be expected. Things do not look 'right'. Stentorian had to labour to get across from the widest stall to lead and took 1.5f to do it. Easily headed by 2f out and a tame response prior to an early fade. Another leader at halfway without the tools to uphold the record. Roayh has not looked Group class and his 3rd place in the Coventry felt 'odd' and perhaps an Ascot assisted run. The Coventry form has not stood up well and Roayh part of the problem. Ran a little too freely here and failed to stay. But just suffling with Surrey Star (another proven lesser on from Good wood) if he had. Which meant the race came down to whether NK & MT could run down SStar giving him a 1.5L start in a 3 horse sprint for 2f. SStar helped the other two by being green in the lead but pretty easily picked off by NK who travelled like the one better class horse int he race. Won a little comfortably and not been tested fully yet. MTime looked a slower type and took longer to get going and wore the leader down rather than picking him up in the NK manner. But, the two with some potential to be better class and be worth the Group race tag got past the lesser ones so 'enough' pace in the race and both assisted by making some early progress between 3f to 2f out before the final efforts started. |
